People in creative or artistic careers, such as composers, novelists and filmmakers, develop new ideas through daydreaming.

    Note

The keywords for Q9 are “writers”, “artists”, “creative people”, “daydream”

We easily can see “writers, artists or creative people” are only mentioned in paragraph 3.

writers, artists” and “composer, novelists, filmmakers” refer to creative or artistic careers. Following paragraph 3, we can see these people develop new ideas through daydreaming, it means that “they use daydreaming to develop new ideas”

Thus, the correct answer for Q9 should be “develop new ideas”

complex” and “complicated” have same meaning in this context.

“parts of brain linked with complex problem-solving during daydreaming”, it means that “parts of brain are used for complicated problem-solving during daydreaming”

Thus, the correct answer for Q10 should be “problem-solving”

Questions 11-13

Choose the correct letter, A, B, C or D.

11

Daydreams are

  • A
  • B
  • C
  • D
Answer: C

Keywords in Questions

Similar words in Passage

Q11 Daydreams are

  • A. dreams that we have when we fall asleep in daytime.

  • B. about things that happened that make us sad.

  • C. often about things that we would like to happen.

  • D activities that only a few people are able to do.

Everyone daydreams sometimes. We sit or lie down, close our eyes and use our imagination to think about something that might happen in the future or could have happened in the past. Most daydreaming is pleasant. We would like the daydream to happen and we would be very happy if it did actually happen.

Daydreams are not dreams, because we can only daydream if we are awake

Note:

The keyword for Q11 is “daydream”

After reading passage 1, we can rule out option A, B and D as correct answers for Q11 because:

  • We can easily see in the paragraph 1 that “everyone daydreams sometimes”, it means that “daydream are not activities only a few people can do”, so option D is incorrect.

  • Option A: “daydreams are not dream, because we can only daydream if we are awake”, it means that we don’t daydream when we fall asleep, option A is not correct.

  • Option B: we can see in 1st paragraph that “most daydream are pleasant, we would like the daydream to happen…”, contradicted with the information in option B. So, option B is incorrect.

In addition, after reading paragraph 1, we can see that “daydreams are something might happen in the future or could have happened in the past… We would like the daydream to happen”, it means that option C is correct.

Thus, the correct answer for Q11 should be “C”

12

In the nineteenth century, many people believed that daydreaming was

  • A
  • B
  • C
  • D
Answer: B

Q12. In the nineteenth century, many people believed that daydreaming was

  • A. helpful in factory work.

  • B. a way of avoiding work.

  • C. something that few people did.

  • D. a healthy activity.

Research in the 1980s showed that most daydreams are about ordinary, everyday events. It also showed that over 75% of workers in so-called 'boring jobs', such as lorry drivers and security guards, spend a lot of time daydreaming in order to make their time at work more interesting

One reason for this is that when you are daydreaming, you are not working. In the 19th century, for example, people who daydreamed a lot were judged to be lazy.

Other people have said that daydreaming leads to 'escapism' and that this is not healthy, either

Note:

The keywords for Q12 are “19th century”, “daydreaming”

After reading paragraph 5 of passage 1, we can easily choose option B to be the correct answer because:

“when you are daydreaming, you are not working. In the 19th century, for example, people who daydreamed a lot were judged to be lazy.”, it means that in 19th century, many people believed daydreaming is a way to be lazy, avoid working.

we can rule out option A, C and D as correct answers for Q12 because:

  • Option A: daydreaming is believed to be a way of being lazy, so that it can’t seem to be helpful in factory work.

  • Option C: we can’t find any information to confirm that in 19th century, people believed daydream is something that few people did or not. So, option C is not correct.

  • Option D: “other people said that daydreaming leads to “escapism” and that this is not healthy, either”. It means that option D is incorrect.

Thus, the correct answer for Q12 should be “B”

13

People who daydream a lot

  • A

  • C
  • D
Answer: D

Q13

People who daydream a lot

  • A. usually have creative jobs.

  • B. are much happier than other people.

  • C. are less intelligent than other people.

  • D. do not have as many friends as other people.

Indeed, recent studies show that people who often daydream have fewer close friends than other people. In fact, they often do not have any close friends at all.

Note:

The keywords for Q13 are “people daydream a lot”

After reading paragraph 6 of passage 1, we can easily choose option D to be the correct answer because:

“recent studies show that people who often daydream have fewer close friends than other people.”, it means that people who often daydream (daydream a lot) have fewer friends than others (don’t have as many friends as other people)

All the information in option D is mentioned in the same way in passage 1.

Thus, the correct answer for Q13 should be “D”

Part 1

READING PASSAGE 1

Read the text below and answer Questions 1-13.

Daydreaming

Daydreaming is a universal human experience. It occurs when we sit or lie down, close our eyes, and use our imagination to think about events that might happen in the future or could have occurred in the past. Most daydreams are enjoyable because they involve scenarios we hope to see come true, such as being in someone else's shoes, achieving long-held dreams, or receiving more admiration and approval from others.

Unlike dreams, which occur during sleep, daydreams happen while we are awake and allow us to direct their content. While many daydreams may involve unlikely events, some are rooted in realistic situations and can aid us in determining what we want to do or how to achieve the best outcomes. In this sense, daydreams can be quite useful, as they enable us to gain a deeper understanding of the world and the people around us.

Moreover, daydreaming can stimulate creativity. Individuals in creative professions, such as composers, writers, and filmmakers, often develop new ideas through daydreaming. This creative process also benefits scientists and mathematicians. Albert Einstein famously stated that imagination is more important than knowledge, as knowledge is limited, but creativity is boundless.

Research from the 1980s found that more than 75% of workers engaged in monotonous jobs, like truck drivers and security guards, frequently daydream to make their workday more engaging. Recent studies have also suggested that daydreaming has positive effects on the brain; MRI scans reveal that areas involved in complex problem-solving are more active during daydreaming. This indicates that daydreaming helps consolidate learning similar to dreaming while we are asleep.

Despite its advantages, daydreaming is often viewed negatively in many cultures. One reason is the association of daydreaming with idleness. In the 19th century, frequent daydreamers were usually seen as lazy, especially as factory work and assembly line jobs became widespread. These roles required individuals to perform repetitive tasks with little room for creativity, leading many to see people who daydreamed as slacking off.

Critics also contend that daydreaming fosters 'escapism,' which is considered unhealthy. People who engage in escapism may retreat into a fantasy world where they are successful and popular, rather than addressing real-world challenges. Such individuals often appear unhappy and less willing or able to improve their daily lives. Recent studies indicate that people who frequently daydream tend to have fewer close friends and may even lack close friendships entirely.

In general, people now a days assume that the best thing to be rich is to help others. However, I completely agree with the statement. Few arguments on agreement and a counter agreement with a conclusion along with an example is provided below.
In my view, people who worked hard and earned respect along with money are the real wealthy persons in our society, these people know the real value of the hard work which comes with knowledge, that gives a person to help and encourage needy.
Rich doesn't mean living in a bungalow or driving a luxurious car, it means God has given an opportunity to support people who are helpless. There are lot of people around us who are suffering from serious illness and students who doesn't have enough money to pursue higher studies. Supporting them treating their illness and giving them a bright future is a blessing and the most satisfying thing.
People now a days are helping poor through social welfare organizations example, one of my friends named Francies, he is working as a CEO for Great Eastern shipping company. Although he owns a good bunglow and drives a luxurious car, he is not a selfish person. He donates half of his annual income to charity for social welfare. Society needs these kinds of people to eliminate poverty and as role models to many who wish to do the same.
On the other hand, think about rich people who are selfish, they may save lot of money without participating or donating to welfare organizations. But the result is they will end up alone, they will be no one to favor them when they are needy.
All in all, it can be said that one should always help and donate to poor who are in need in that way the favor always comes back when they are needy.

The line graph illustrates the percentage of people living in USA,Sweden and Japan who's age is 65 and above over a century from 1940 to 2040.
Overall, percentage of senior citizens living in Japan were initially less compared to other two countries and these figures are expected to raise and reach more than a quarter portion. On the other hand, USA had registered as the highest initially, although these trends continued to raise till 1980, later in the year 2040 this trend is expected to record as least.
In 1940, Japan had the least portion of old aged citizens with a count of only 5% and their count had decreased to half of the portion till approximately 1990's. After that their count is significantly raised and expected to reach almost 28% in 2040.
On the other hand, People in the USA were the highest portion initially in 1940 and they continued to maintain their rank till mid 1990's. Surprisingly Sweden overtook USA place in mid 1990's and reached its peak approximately in 2010.Until 2030 senior citizens in Sweden are expected to maintain top position whereas Japan will be the country with highest portion among the three countries in 2040.
