Writing Task 1

The graph shows the proportion of the population aged 65 years and over in three different countries, USA, Sweden and Japan which are represented by three different colours, black, green and red respectively.

Initially, in 1940, USA had the highest proportion of the population aged 65 years and above at 9% while Japan had the lowest proportion at 5%. Conversely, it is predicted in 2040 that Japan will have the highest portion of the population aged 65 years and above at 27% while the USA will have the lowest proportion at 23%. A general trend shown in the graph is that the proportion of the population aged 65 and over will increase in all three countries from 1940 to 2040. The proportion in the USA is generally increasing from 9% in 1940 to 23% in 2040. However, there is a slight decrease in the proportion from 15% in 1982 to 14% in 1996 where it remains constant until approximately 2018. The proportion in Sweden increases from 7% in 1940 to 25% in 2040 and experience periods of decrease from 1982 to 1996 and from 2010 to 2024. For Japan, the proportion decreased from 5% to 3% from 1940 to 1960 and remained constant at 3% until 1986 before beginning to gradually increase to 10% from 1986 to 2026. From 2026 to 2032, there is a sharp increase from 10% to 25% and afterwards there is an increase from 25% to 27% from 2032 to 2040.

Being rich allows us to have more than enough financial resources to sustain ourselves for our entire lives. This raises the question of the use of the amount of money that is in excess. Some people have suggested to use the money to help other people. In my view, I agree with those people because the most important thing about being rich is that it gives us the opportunity to help other people.

It is very important to help other people when we are rich because there are many other people who do not have the same amount of financial resources as rich people. Hence, they are not able to support themselves and afford the basic necessities of life such as food, drinking water and healthcare. Some might not even be able to afford education, which in turn traps them in a vicious cycle poverty. Hence, why should we not donate our money to the charitable causes of helping these people? There have been many rich people organizing philanthropic causes. For example, the Bill and Melinda Gates Fopundation is a non-profit organization aimed to eradicate poverty, disease and inequity around the world. Thus, this shows how we can use our money and resources for charitable causes.

However, before we do so, it is important that we do not squander our money when we are rich. It is very easy to overspend when we are rich because we have the mindset that it is not a challenge to earn back the money that we have spent. So many celebrities and rich people have gone bankrupt from their exorbitant spending. A few examples include rapper 50 Cent and singer Toni Braxton. Hence, before we devote ourselves to help other people, we must ensure that we have enough money to support ourselves and we must not waste it.

In conclusion, the opportunity to help other people is the most important thing about being rich. This will help to eliminate any inequity that is still existing in this world. However, it is important that we are able to support ourselves first before we support others.
