With the increased use of social media in today's world, people have become more obsessed with comparing their lives to others, one of the main points of this comparison being their face and skin tones. To cater to this obsession, new brands are being launched very frequently with products for lightening the skin or making people's faces whiter.
There is a heavy competition among such brands to come up with products and their marketing in order to attract the attention of maximum people. While running this race, many brands use chemicals that might produce instant results but would prove to be harmful if used for a long time. There have been some incidents where the consumers have reported health issues by using such kinds of products.
Most beauty brands also do heavy testing on animals. For the product to be launched in the market, it has to pass certain standards and benchmarks. To achieve this, animals are kept in laboratories and tested on. They suffer the consequences if the product is harmful in any way. This inhumane behaviour should be banned by the government.
Additionally, for the marketing of these products, there are numerous ads that condemn a darker skin tone and glorify people with light skin tones. This creates a need for using these products in the consumer's mind. While these products may produce a short-term effect, it is scientifically impossible to change a person's skin tone. But many people believe the negative image that these ads create and start hating themselves or darker toned people.
These negative consequences on society should weigh much more than the profit made by the brands. Therefore, the glorification of lighter skin tone by marketing agencies and production of such products should be prohibited.
