Writing task 2

Nowadays, skin-whitening products are incredibly popular across the world and provide huge profits for the companies involved in their sale. This is because the media shows white skin as ideal for all. Certainly, this trend has adverse effects on individuals and society as a whole.

To begin with, one of the predominant reasons why people use whitening products is media influence. To illustrate, the media shows that white-skinned people are more successful and beautiful than those who have dark skin. Keeping this impression in mind, people use different cosmetic products to enhance their skin color. In addition, white skin colour is linked with status. Since people of high standards always stay inside without much exposure to the sun, they have clean and bright skin. Therefore, many people use whitening creams to show off.

Of course, these products have negative effects on people’s health. For instance, companies mix chemicals in these products, and they are harmful to the skin. A recent study has shown that the ingredients of these products are carcinogenic and may cause cancer if applied regularly. There are detrimental effects on society as well. People with darker skin believe that white is better than black. Due to this, they try to avoid being part of social events; as a result, they suffer from depression and stress.

To conclude, it is indeed a fact that whitening products have a profitable market. Media influence is one of the major factors contributing to this trend. However, steps should be taken to change this mindset, as it has hazardous effects on people and society.
