Task 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The diagram below shows how coffee is produced and prepared for sale in supermarkets and shops.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

You should write at least 150 words.

Writing task 1

The diagram provides information on the preparation and production of coffee from picking the beans to packing them into jars for sale in shops. The process can be seperated into two parts - work on the beans themselves and work on the bean mixture.

To start off the production, farmers pick the beans from coffee plants and dry them under the sun. Afterwards, further heat is applied to roast them. This step is quickly followed by refrigerating. When the beans are cool, they are ground up small and combined with hot water in a container.

Using a strainer, the mixture is lifted up from the water and once again frozen. It has now become a frozen liquid, which can then be ground up again and put to dry in a vacuum. There the water exits the receptacle, leaving inside only the final product of the manufacture. The processed coffee is then packed into jars, sealed and sent off to stores.

Writing task 2

While some believe that having art as a subject in school is beneficial to a child, others think it serves no purpose. I entirely support those who can understand the value of creativity at a young age.

Parents that claim art is a waste of time at school, often do so because they do no see a prosperous future with such interests. Art may seem like just a childish recreational activity that has no uses or applications in the real word. They often believe that their child should follow a career in science and a life, grounded in facts, and that sketching and painting will not get them anywhere. Since they know that in most cases painting for a living may not bring home an adequate salary, these parents try to keep their children away from art.

However, those sharing that opinion miss the vital fact that creativity, stimulated through art, is extremely useful in all aspects of life. Even if somebody is working in the scientific sector, they would need to employ creative thinking to further their research, come up with new hypotheses, and solve complex problems. Doing art from a young age can help a child develop a mind open to new ideas, as the activity itself requires to think of different things you can draw and various ways to express them. Another benefit is that it can refine the fine motor skills, needed for many other jobs, hobbies, or tasks. As children practice drawing and become increasingly concerned with details, it can also show them the importance of each small thing in the bigger picture.

In conclusion, it seems to me that studying art as a subject at school has a number of merits such as stimulating creativity and helping the development of fine motor skills, whereas the only demerit is that it is often hard to earn substantial money with a career as an artist.
