Writing task 1

The bar chart illustrates various means of travelling used by commuters in the years 1960, 1980, and 2000 in a European city.

Overall, it can be seen that cummuting by car became the most popular mode in the coming four decades while taking a bus lost its popularity among the travellers.

Percentage of people who travel by car was only 7% in 1960 and it increased by 30% in the year 2000 to become 37%. The reason for this might be that people felt more comfortable in their own cars which is usually more spacious. Travelling by bus lost its attraction, as the data indicates, proportion of commuters who picked a bus fell to 15% in 2000 from 38% in 1960. Commuters who used train or tube rose and fell in the given period with a average of 23% and 25% resectively. The changes in percentages demonstrate the differing attitudes and ways of life that occured during the second half of 20th century.

Writing task 2

Our modern day life has become more and more comfortable, thanks to the increase in advanced technology but this has come with its own disadvantages. Nowadays, children who are born and living in the western societies like Europe, the US and Australia are getting obese and the percentage of such children has risen by 10% in the last decade.

One of the leading cause of overweight among children is the unhealthy food. These days, increased consumption of processed and fast food is contributing to this problem as such kind of food contains too much fat and/or sugar. Studies have shown that children who are fed with burgers, pizza, sandwiches and soda drinks tend to show an increase in their weights along with an increased chance of getting other problems including high blood pressure and diabetes.

Another reason for obesity in children can be associated towards less physical activity. People of early age are getting less involved in exercise and outdoor activities. This is due to the fact that children are exposed to other alternatives that involve no or quite less movement of their bodies like playing video games and watching television. Although such activities do benefit the children by forcing them to use their mental faculties in solving complex problems but since cartoons and video games are developed to be addictive, children are more proned to fall a prey to this feature of content.

In conclusion, modern day lifestyle and destructive habits are contributing the most when it comes to the issue of overweight in children.
