Writing Task 1

The given tables depict the statistics of the intake of foreign students in Europe to Australia between 2007 and 2009.

Overall, the intake of European students in Australia is higher than the intake of Australian students in Europe. There has also been a increase in the number of intakes in the Australian universities from 200 to 2009. However, a notable exception is the Australian students intake into the European universities which remarkably remained the same over the two years.

Looking specifically at the intake of European students to Australia there has been a little increase from 189 to 226 over the two years. The highest increase is observed in Germany from 27 intakes in 2007 to 62 in 2009. Sweden and France show a miniscule increase as well. However, the intake students from United Kingdom to Australian Universities has decreased from 31 to 26, and the intake of Netherland students into these universities remained the same over the two years. On the whole, France students contributed to the highest intake and Netherland students contributed to the lowest intake for both the years.

Regarding the exchange of Australian university students into European Universities, the number of the intakes has remained same over the two years at 152. French and German students had a sllightly higher intake in 2009 than 2007. On the contrary, the intake of Sweden, United Kingdom and Netherland students in the European universities started dwindling and decreased in 2009 . Remarkably, French students still had made up the highest number of intakes in the European universities.

The advantages of the spread of English as a global language will continue to outweigh its disadvantages. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

You should write at least 250 words.

It is often believed that the advantages of English as a global language will continue to outweigh its disadvantages. I completely agree with this opinion as I firmly belive that having a global language os very important in this diverse multilingual world.

Firstly, we live in a multilingual world where we have to socialize and network with different linguistic people on an everyday basis. This gives rise to the importance of having a globally accepted language which is English. Even primary school children would need to communicate and make friends with different linguistic people and since English is the mostly taught language in schools, it would be easier for the young children to communicate in English with their friends. For example, 8 out of 10 Asian students in a primary school in the United Stated prefer to speak in English with their friends since it is widely understood by all. Thus, English has emerged to be a global language owing it higher acceptibility and easy understanding.

Secondly, the spread of English as a globally accepted language removes the need for translators and interpreters in major multinational companies and political events. Many companies, global and political events rely heavily on interpretors and translators. In the multinational companies, the reliabilty of translators is at stake because they would be knowing the key functionings and strategies of the company from the meetings in which they translate. Morever, there is a risk of not being able to translate properly which results in confusion and a lack of clarity among the stakeholders. Having English as the globally accepted language would help remove the language barriers in these kinds of meetings and events. For instace, a recent survery conducted in a multinational firm in the UK showed that 80 percent of the stakeholders felt that there major discrepancies with the translations and have shown interest in moving towards English for communicating with other stakeholders in the future. Thus, major multinational companies are realizing the need to have English as the common language for its ease.

To summarize, I strongly believe that English has emerged to be the global language of the world owing to its wide range of pros which easily outweigh the cons
