The diagrams below show how houses can be protected in areas which are prone to flooding.

Write a report for a university, lecturer describing the information shown below.

You should write at least 150 words.

Writing task 1

The diagram provides information on protection measurements available for houses located in areas subjected to flooding.

Overall, there are two possible situations which involve different solutions. In one case, a stopbank is taken advantage of to protect buildings from flooding, while raised structures are built when a stopbank is not available.

In some areas, there are stopbanks whose height is sufficient to prevent up to 100-year flood level from reaching edifices. However, because of the barrier represented by the stopbank, it may happen that an internal ponding is created as a consequence of internal runoff. In order to avoid an excessive increase of the internal ponding's level, a floodgate is implemented in the stopbank so that water can be expelled through a berm in the river/drain.

On the contrary, in areas which do not offer stopbanks, accommodations are built on a raised level. The height from the ground of these kinds of houses is evaluated by taking into account the level of a 100-year flood, or ponding, with the addition of a freeboard equivalent to 300 mm.

Writing task 2

Couples who live together before marrying have the opportunity to know each other's needs and wants better before they confirm their willing to marry. It is believed that this practice can involve several benefits for young couples, and I strongly agree with this idea.

First and foremost, sharing the same house allows people to discover the real personality of an individual, together with the ability of the latter to overcome disagreement with another person. This is a fundamental aspect to know before marrying someone because many people act differently when they are in public from when they are at home. A clear example of this behaviour's change is represented by those kinds of people who are very quite among others, but who also become dramatically violent when they are back to their houses. Being aware of a person's true character is vital to understand whether or not it is a right decision to marry him or her.

Second, living together with one's own partner offers the chance to build a stronger bond and feeling of complicity within the couple. Married people often need to face challenging situations which require a solid team work to be overcome; hence, a period of cohabitation may be an excellent way for peole to improve their couple's unity, to feel closer to each other, and more engaged in common activities.

In conclusion, living together before marriage can be highly beneficial for a couple, as it allows a deeper and clearer understing of each other as well as to build a stronger couple connection. Therefore, I think that cohabitation is a very positive approach for people who plan to get married.
