Man is a creature of habit. Once something becomes a part and parcel of life, it becomes very difficult to let go of that course of habit. Generally, habits may be good or bad but it often observed that bad habits are the hardest ones to lose. Generally, people are aware about their wrong-doings but still find it next to impossible to change themselves for the better. One such dangerous bad habit is smoking.
It is a well known fact that smoking is injurious to health and can be very fatal, yet many seem to disregard the side-effects completely for short-lived pleasures. They tend to forget about the long term repecussions that are associated with the smoking addiction and perceive smoking as a way to reduce stress. People have glorified the act of bonding over a smoke so much so that now-a-days, the youth are heavily influenced by this misconception. Various tea- stall vendors are now observed to open stalls which also sell cigarettes outside colleges and work places as a way to lure poeple towards smoking so as to avoid them from dealing with their problems momentorily.
Throughout the years, various campaigns and awareness programs have been conducted by the goverment as well as various other agencies, but all are in vain. Unless the selling of cigarettes is curbed at a local level, it is impossible to reduce smoking. Background checks of the buyer should be conducted to ensure no underaged individual consumes cigarettes. The sale of cigarettes must be restricted to liquor stores and proper licensing protocols must be in place for vendors. This will not only curb easy availibility but also increase the processes required which inturn will reduce the number of certified sellers.
In conclusion, it will vital to stop the youth from inculcating this toxic habit and reduce the rate of smoking in the society. When a person smokes, it is not only harmful for him/her but also for others in the surrounding. Hence, concrete steps must be taken up to change this habit and embrace a healthly lifestyle.
