Writing task 1

The chart here shows the data of the unemployment situation in Australia in the year 2012. It represents the data in percentages along the y-axis while dividing the x-axis into four quarters.

During the first quarter shows an increase in the unemployment rate in the urban areas, while there is a steady decrease in the rural areas. The unemployment rate has increased from 2% to 4% in the urban areas, while in rural areas, it has decreased from around 6% to below 5%.

In the second quarter of the year, a decreasing trend from 4% to near 2% by the third quarter in the unemployment rate has been observed in the urban areas while an increase in the rural areas is observed.

The third quarter again marks an increasing trend in the unemployment rate for the urban areas whereas the rural areas show a slight decrease reaching 5% mark. Third-quarter marks an increase of 2% in the unemployment rate, increasing the rate from the previous 2% to the current 4% in the urban areas.

The fourth quarter again shows an increasing trend for the urban areas, increasing to final of 5% unemployment rate while remaining same for the rural areas as before to 5%.

The unemployment rate has increased in urban areas, while the unemployment rate has decreased in rural areas by the last quarter. Thus, the summary being, urban areas have been affected more by unemployment while the rural areas are progressing in developing more opportunities to work, thereby decreasing the unemployment rate.

Task 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Some people think students should study the science of food and how to prepare it. Others think that school time should be used in learning important subjects. Discuss both views and give your opinion?

Give reasons for your answer, and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

Learning different subjects is a part of one's school life. These subjects are generally the ones that most school students learn in almost every part of the world; the examples include history, science, mathematics, geography, social sciences etc. As per my knowledge, schools in the United States have non-conventional subjects; these include the science of food, home-sciences, astronomy, literature etc.

Although one can argue which among these subjects are the actually important ones, but what I believe is, students must have the decision or opportunity to explore all possible kinds of subjects so that a clearer mindset be made as to which subject is important for them. For example, a student interested in the science of food may not want to study geography, while a student interested in geography may not want to study the science of food. The conventional subjects are essential to learning these newly coming subjects, but saying which is important is more or less student dependent.

People saying that students should study the science of food and its preparation may be focused on the current state of lack of food availability in some countries or may well be pointing to an important point that food is indeed important for our survival and therefore suggesting to learn the subject. In this regard, the ones not thinking may thereby be saying that these subjects are not as essential as the conventional ones and preparing food can be learned at one's home.

The point to understand here is the difference between "cooking" food and "understanding the science" of food. One may very well "cook" food, but might not understand how to "prepare" food. I believe that learning the overall science of food is as essential as learning the geography of places. Other conventional subjects also come into the same picture in a similar fashion. Thereby, I believe we cannot say that studying the science of food is not as important a subject as learning physics, chemistry or mathematics. It also comes into the domain of important subjects as the others. One reason that may well fit all the above is that the science of food would help develop new technologies for making our food withstand the changing climate. We could therefore make it last longer, which is essential for our survival. As shown in the movie Interstellar, the understanding of how crops grow would be helpful for the survival of humans in future.
