Writing task 1

The given diagram compares two different methods to safeguard properties that are located in regions at risk of flooding.

Overall, the two key differences between both processes is the presence of a stopbank. However, in either case, homes are built over stilts.

In the first diagram, the stopbank stops the flow of the river as the mound is higher than the 100-year flood level. The houses nearby are built on stilts that mantain them above the internal ponding that can be caused from the runoff of heavy rainfall. This water flows back into the river, by a floodgate which sits at the height of the berm.

In areas where there is no levee, homes are built using even higher stilts as nothing will stop the river from flooding. The floor of the building has to be raised to the freeboard height, which is a measurement exactly 300mm above the 100-year flood level.

Writing task 2

Back in the day, living with your significant other before walking down the altar was almost unacceptable, whereas now, the modern couple is unlikely to commit to marriage without testing the waters firsthand. This essay agrees that cohabitation is benefitial for juvenile couples and will outline the reasons why.

In my view, sharing a space with your partner provides an accurate preview of what marriage feels like. In other words, no one can fully get to know their boyfriend or girlfriend without spending months, or even years, next to them. For example, it is believed to drive marital success because people will find out whether their lover is really compatible with them. Although it may lead immature couples to break up sooner, it is significantly easier to end a lease and prevent making a regrettable mistake, than to file for divorce later, which can be a costly and emotionally wrecking situation for both parties.

Moreover, joining households means more financial stability for the future spouses. Although weddings conform a big expenditure, if youths put aside cash in their saving pot early enough, the planning will be stress free and the soon-to-be weds can throw the wedding party of their dreams. In addition, the longer the wait for tying the knot, the bigger the chances for career growth, which will in turn increase the chances of a higher salary going forward. Most of the time, right after taking the plunge, a baby is likely to make its way into the family, causing a pause to professional development because one of the progenitors has to take parental leave at work.

In conclusion, although sharing a property may be a rushed decision and lead couples to break up sooner, I agree that it leads to marital success. It is especially important for young people to fully know if they are a good match for their partner.
