You should write at least 150 words.

Writing Task 1

The chart illustrates the number of girls per 100 boys enrolled in different levels of school education: primary, secondary and tertiary. Comparisons are made between developing and developed countries in two different years, 1990 and 1998, and all data are related to a target number, set as 100.

The graph shows a trend downwards - from primary to tertiary education - in the number of girl students that enrolled in 1990 in developing countries. In detail, 83 girls per 100 boys were enrolled in primary education, whereas this number dropped to 66 in the tertiary. However, this trend was partly reversed in 1998. Indeed, whereas no strong changes occurred in primary education numbers, more girls were enrolled in secondary and tertiary as compared to 1990. However, these number are still far from the target level. On the other hand, the number of girls per 100 enrolled boys was rather stable in developed countries, as no tangible differences were observed comparing 1990 to 1998, at any school level. However, the graph clearly shows the great gap between developing and developed countries, and this difference is even more evident considering the tertiary education. In both years, indeed, developed countries had more than 100 girls enrolled, whereas this number was lower than 80 in developing regions.

Task 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Some people believe that capital punishment should not be used. Others, however, argue that it should be allowed for the most serious crimes.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

You should write at least 250 words.

In the 21st century, several countries are still using capital punishment for serious crimes. On this point, the public opinion is split: some people agree with this view, whereas other sustain the idea that it should be avoided in favor of other intervention strategies.

The following sections will discuss both views and I will provide my opinion on the topic.

As already mentioned, a portion of people agrees that some serious crimes - for example child rape or efferate murders - should be punished with death. As they see it, indeed, no other punishment could ever counterbalance the effects of the crime and the subjected should not be given even the most remote possibility do commit such crime again. Thus, they see capital punishment as the only possible solution to deal with dangerous subjects.

Other people, however, have a different opinion, suggesting that it is more important to make the criminal understand the consequences of the crime, rather than leading him/her to death. They believe, for instance, that criminals should be psychologically helped while in prison, in order to fully deal with their actions and emotions: many criminals may, indeed, have acted under disturbed mental conditions, thus society should help them, in order to redime them.

Having considered both points of view, I believe that capital punishment should be abolished to stop this loop of violence. As I see it, indeed, a murder should not be punished with the same cruelty; instead, the criminal should actually face the consequences of his/her actions, and should meditate and reflect upon them. In addition, as many investigations have often led to the sentence of innocent people for tiny wrong details, it would be against human rights to execute someone who didn't actually commit any crime.

All in all, capital punishment should be replaced by more constructive intervention strategies, which may help to redime the criminal as well as to make the society a better place.
