The table below gives information about the population of New Zealand between 2011 and 2012.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and making comparisons where relevant.

You should write at least 150 words.

Writing task 1

The table gives the number of people in New Zealand for the timeframe between 2011 and 2012.

We observe that cumulatively there is a 0.6% change from 2011 to 2012.

There has been a decrease of 1,750 in number for children who are under age 15.

On similar lines, there is a population for the age group from 15 to 39 by 0.2%. We see a rate of increase for the age group 40 to 64 i.e., 0.6% and the elderly people who are over 65 years of age show an increase in population by 4%,a whooping number of 400,000.

Analysing this data, one can say that the major contributor to New Zealand's increase in population for 2012 is the older generation whereas the number of children and millenials have decreased from 2011 to 2012.

However these age groups cannot be compared with each other as the age group above 65 has fewer people in comparison to the age group from 15 to 64. Although it says that there is only 0.6 % increase for the age group 40 to 64 the number is huge, about 60000. If you compare children under 15 , the decrease in number is only 1750 whereas the age group 15-39 shows a decrease of 20,000. However the percentage decrease of both groups are the same. This is due to the fact that the number of people is the age group 15 to 39 is higher than under 15.

Task 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic.

The most important function of music is that it helps people reduce stress. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

The topic of music has intrigued me since its inception, more likely my own inception as music history goes back to the times before I was even born. From the deaf musician Beethoven to the current Taylor Swift hits, music is varied across regions and diverse across cultures. Personally I relate music to mathematics . You can either hate it or love it.

One has to be careful when they say what kind of music too. Music soothes the soul is a popular saying and I agree to it. I find peace in my day to day work when I have the electronic beats playing through my headphones. It reduces the stress associated with deliverables and gives me a rhythm to work with.

Personally I do not enjoy concerts with loud music and its pomp and show. All this gives me a headache and I believe it does the same for many other people too. It may cause temporary stress as well. The taste of slow music varies from generation to generation but definitely it contributes to reduced stress levels. It is common habit to play some soothing music in the background during Yoga classes and meditation which is found to give calm to the atmosphere and help ease our tensions. Most people use music as a therapy if they have anxiety or panic attacks. Scientifically many experiments have been conducted to prove that music beats generate different kind of signals in our brain. Playing a certain kind of music during massages is also a very common practice.

Thus due to its many ways of use nowadays, music's role in reducing stress is pivotal. Some people feel playing music in the background takes away the concentration from their activity and may cause stress. However it may depend on the individual and their style of work.
