Writing task 1

The chart illutrates the evolution in total sales experienced by five mobile phone companies (Samsung, Apple, Nokia, LG, and ZTE) from 2009 to 2013.

Overall, ZTE, Apple, and Samsung sellings rose from 2009 to 2013; on the contrary, Nokia and LG decreased their sales during the period given. Moreover, Samsung replaced Nokia as leader seller by 2013, and, meanwhile, the least selling brand changed from Apple to ZTE.

Samsung almost doubled its selling, from around 230 to 450, from 2009 to 2013, while ZTE slightly increased from 50 to approximately 60. However, the most remarkable relative increase was experienced by Apple, as its sales in 2013 were about six times its sales in 2009, 150 and around 25 respectively.

LG sales had a moderate, yet steady, decline from 2009 to 2013; they shifted from an initial value of approximately 120 to a final value about 80. Nokia experienced only a modest decline from 2009 to 2011 (from just under 450 to over 400), but its selling plummeted to 250 from 2011 to 2013.

Writing task 2

Some individuals support the idea that change is a positive factor in life; on the contrary, others prefer to avoid it completely. In my opinion, change is usually beneficial since it is the key to personal and social progress, regardless of the risks that it may involve.

On the one hand, change is vital for humans, for their well-being, and for society's improvement. People can alter their routine on different levels, from dramatic changes to slight modifications of their habits; however, both choices will lead to discovering new things and, possibly, new interests. As an example, some people may find a new job that makes them feel fullfilled, while others may learn a new hobby, which brings them happiness and satisfaction. Society also benefits from changes because it is only through change that populations can improve according to their needs and wants. It may happen through exchange of cultural knowledge or through adaptation to new environmental conditions.

On the other hand, change may be threathening for certain human beings because they are afraid of uncertainty as well as of its consequences. Some people invested many resources, such as money and time, to obtain their current lifestyle, and they are not willing to jeopardize what they accomplished for novelty. As a matter of fact, change can also lead to negative results; for instance, a person could become unemployed in the attempt of changing his job. For this reason, some people prefer to remain in their comfort zone and enjoy a life free of risk.

In conclusion, change involves a certain grade of uncertainty that can be fraightening for some people. However, it is essential for humans and society to evolve and improve. Therefore, I belive that change is a positive thing.
