Writing task 1

The given bar chart illustrates the emigration of people from Great Britain to 5 countries in a period between 2004 and 2007, on an annual basis.

At the first glance of this demonstration, it is obvious that while Australia attracted most British immigrants throughout the period., the smallest figure belongs to France - about 19 million British.

In 2004, Australia attracted just above 40 million British emigrants, 6 million higher than Spain. The figure slightly went down in 2005 and reached the highest peak in 2006 - with more than 50 million Britons. After that, a decrease can be witnessed in 2007, down to just 1 million more than 2004.

The second most popular destination for British emigrants is Spain, although the figure is quite smaller. The number of Britons emigrating to Spain remained quite the same in 2004 and 2005, slightly went down in 2006 and plunged to 29 million in 2007. New Zealand and the USA has the number of emigrants not being over 25 million.

As for France, while reaching the peak of just more than 30 million people. the figures are quite low - the smallest number of emigrants to France was 19 million people in 2007.

Task 2

Some people think that hosting international sports events may be beneficial for a country. Discuss both views.

You should write at least 250 words.

Some believe that whilst travelling or living in countries that use English as an official language is the best way of learning English, that is not the only way to learn any language. In my opinion, this idea is valid to some extent.

On the one hand, learning English in an English-speaking country is beneficial. Firstly, when the surrounding people use English on a daily basis, it is a good chance for a learner to practise their skills. For instance, by using English when shopping, in a restaurant or in a more serious environment like on campus, English learners can sharpen their English skills by practising their speaking, writing, listening and reading skills as long as strengthening their vocabulary. Therefore, the learning process might be fast and efficient with a great motivation of learning - learn English to adapt to the alien environment.

On the other hand, this is not the only way to learn any language. To illustrate, learners can attend offline courses of languages in centres, clubs, online courses and lessons on websites or applications like Duolingo, Memrise or Elsa, or traditional way with textbooks and cassettes. This kind of learning is much more convenient as learners can stay in their motherland to learn any languages they like, especially in the COVID-19 pandemic with restricted cross-country transportation or lockdowns and quarantines for preventing the spread of the deadly disease. It can also be more economical to learn a new language right in the learner's homeland- a possibly less amount of money is spent on learning a language in the home country than travelling to the countries using that language, according to several recent surveys.

In conclusion, while learning English in an English-speaking country is appreciated, there are more ways to learn such as attending a course in the country where the learner is from.
