Task 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The diagrams below show the existing ground floor plan of a house and a proposed plan for some building work.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

You should write at least 150 words.

Writing task 1

The diagram shows the current and recommended design of a ground floor of some building.

From the diagram of two floor plans, it is clear that the designer is trying to create more spacious rooms by removing the hallway completely. This has given more room to the living room, hence making it much bigger. Along with the hallway, the stairs has also been moved towards the wall, which again gave more space to the living room.

The floor has been designed such that, now, the access to other rooms are much easier. We can see that the internal doors of the kitchen is much bigger and is closer to the entrance. This will tremendiously reduce the distance a person has to walk in the current plan to get to the kitchen. The kitchen is further improved with addition of a furniture around its outer walls.

One downfall to the new suggested plan is that the storage under the stairs has been completely removed. Removal of the storage can be burdensome as there is no other place defined in the design to store the materials that were already there. With the new plan, there is little to no privacy in both living room and kitchen, which can be of least concern as both these rooms are supposed to cater the entire family.

You should write at least 250 words.

Writing task 2

Schools have been the building block for all education system in the entire world. However, recently there has been many concerns around this age-old system and some parents these days prefer to teach their children at home rather than sending them to school. Both of these methods of teaching have their own advantages, which we'll discuss further in this essay.

Schooling has been an important part of development. In many countries, schools are the first place for anyone to get a proper education. As more children had access to schooling this led to increase in educated workforce, which eventually helped improve the economic condition of their families. In many developing countries including Nepal, many students are the first generations to get a higher education. Schooling has enabled them to dream of a better career and hence a better future.

Moreover, school is not only about education, a child can learn many social skills in school. In each classroom there are many children, these children are of different background and different characters. School becomes a playground for these children to learn soft skills to communicate and make friends. It can also act as an introductory course for children to learn about the skills required in adulthood.

In contrary, house teaching can be more people centeric. In home, a parent would give as much needed attention and care for the growth of their children. House education mostly rely on the abilities and interests of the child. They don't have to follow the same course material and it can be modified according to the needs of their sons and daughters. Hence, it creates a nurturing environment with strong support for the child to take on the career of their own interests.

Additionally, home teaching reduces unnecessary competition. The grading system of schools, which relies heavily on IQ and memory, is unable to justify the creative talents that the child may posses. When I was in school, one of my seniors committed sucide due to the pressure of good grades. These pressures are purely created because we have made schooling a competative grading system. Conversely, there is no competition in home teaching, a child is never pressurized to be better than other, he/she learns more through practical knowledge. This helps to create self acceptance in the children at an early age.

To conclude, both home teaching and school plays an important role in a child's overall growth. In my opinion, a better thought should be given to the issues our current schooling practices are facing. We should come up with a new guidelines to create a structure which is more inclusive of all kinds of students.
