Task 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The chart below shows global sales of the top five mobile phone brands between 2009 and 2013.

Write a report for a university, lecturer describing the information shown below.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

You should write at least 150 words.

Writing task 1

The presented bar chart showcases how the mobile phone sales have changed throughout time. Five major brands have contributed their figures for three separate years.

While some of the popular brands presented have shown an increase in their sales, the success of others gradually dropped in the 2009-2013 period. Apple and Samsung's sales per year have soared in 2013, however, Nokia has dramatically plunged to a new low. The drop of sales for LG, as well as the growth of interest in ZTE is conspicuos, but not that significant.

Surprisingly, the growth in sales does not define the brands' popularity. From the chart one can clearly see two leading companies, Samsung and Nokia, whose annual sales have reached an impressive high of more than 400 and have not gone below 200. In contrast, such brands as Apple, LG and ZTE seemingly cater to a much smaller audience and thus stayed within a 150 sales per year limit.

Task 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic.

Some people prefer to spend their lives doing the same things and avoiding change. Others, however, think that change is always a good thing.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

Writing task 2

The views on whether we need to seek stability or strive for change differ from one individual to the other and are heavily influenced by ones' outlook on life and success.

On the one hand, change is commonly associated with growth, both personal and professional, and, thus, some people invision their life as constant movement towards the next goal. Conseqently, they choose to avoid quotidian routines and tend to take bigger risks, believing in thier ability if not to succeed, then to find a new path in life. More than that, stability can weaken cognitive function and might be regarded as boring since it does not evoke much adrenaline and excitement.

On the other hand, major life shifts are not necessarily positive: depending on prior experience some people might feel afraid of change or intimidated by it. There is no way of telling if a certain risk is worth taking and that is why avoiding new beginings and staying within their comfort zone acts like a safety mecanism for those individuals to whom stability is tantamount to their overall well-being. At the same time, the feeling of security can provide much needed reassurance and allow people to gradually enrich their lives without drastic change.

As for my opinion, change might seem overwhelming at times, however, we have to embrace it to live our life to its' fullest. The road not taken is the one we regret the most about on the deathbed and confounding stability with security is what oftentimes holds us back.

In general, people do not see eye to eye on the matter and the ways we percieve change are controversial. To some it is in the way of success, to others - incongruous with safety.
