Writing task 1

The bar chart depicts the sales of mobile phones from five international companies with a discontinuous time frame from 2009 to 2013.

At a first glance, an apparent dominance in the mobile phone market by Samsung and Nokia can be observed throughout the years 2009, 2011, and 2013. However, there is a significant contrast in the trend between these two companies. Samsung is on an inclining trend with its sales almost doubling from 245 in 2009 to 450 in 2013, whereas Nokia loses its winning edge as its sales steeply dropped down from 445 in 2009 to 250 in 2013.

It is noticeable that Apple, LG, and ZTE all take a light proportion of the mobile market compared to Samsung and Nokia. Out of these three companies, Apple manages to reach its highest sales in 2013 – which is 150–. This is circa 30 percent of sales that Samsung made in the same year. On a positive note, Apple exhibits its potential in the market as its sales nearly quadrupled from 25 in 2009 to 99 in 2011. It pushes its sales growth 30 percent further, reaching 150 sales in 2013. ZTE also resembles the same trend that Apple has performed, but at a slower pace.

Unfortunately, LG, being one of the light companies in the competition, shows the highest sale by making 125 sales in 2009, yet gradually descends down to 75 sales in 2013 ringing a red alarm to its company.

Overall, the sales of Samsung, Apple, and ZTE are rising on different scales whereas LG and Nokia are facing a downward trend in their sale growth.

Writing task 2

Change is vast. The word 'change' can appear either positive or negative depending on the background an individual was nurtured, or experiences that an individual encountered. One might feel 'change' as a tool to step out from their comfort zone, just like Demian's bird which brought change to its world when it first broke its eggshell. On the other hand, one might take 'change' as a complete disaster in instances where it brings a negative impact on their life. Like the two faces of Janus, it is hard to define 'change' when it comes to good or bad as it put itself in a gray area.

The highlight of 'change', like its literal denotation, comes from altering or modifying the current situation. Imagine if there were no changes in our daily lives. One may excel at a certain point, but improvements, developments, and enhancements would disappear. Taking it to an extreme case, it would even bring boredom and lead to depression to major of the populations around the world. Change has enabled us to mature, cherish the moments, and evolve as flexible beings. A most common instance would be moving to a university. This brings changes in the environment for both the parent and the child – the child learns to become independent and the parent also learns how to isolate their loving ones and watch them from behind.

Unfolding the other side of 'change', it can potentially push someone off a cliff depending on the case and perception. Picture oneself in a hospital, where a doctor pronounces a diagnosis as cancer. It is hard to hold a positive attitude to this change and could even reach a state of denial. People are easily concerned when 'change' is out of their hands and can no longer be controlled. Another example could be the change that covid-19 has brought to our lives. The infection rate is rising daily despite the vaccination rates and this devastating tunnel does not seem to end. Socializing has significantly decreased, which not only impacted the people but also the market worldwide. Ironically, this change in the environment prevented bringing 'change' to people's lives. A fixed life pattern, constant routine, just like a hamster in a wheel. Wars, natural hazards, diseases would be an unwelcomed guests to human society.

Change is like a seesaw. It fluctuates every day bringing tears of happiness and sadness to our lives. One could magnify on the cons, and one may on the other. Personally, change brings a positive end to humankind. It can be debatable, however, I feel humans have evolved to adapt and reframe the 'change' even in the worst scenario. Just how natural disasters have brought strengthening of the infrastructures, how covid-19 has brought massive development in virtual technology.
