The following pie charts illustrate the proportion of houses being rented and owned in the UK in 1991 and 2007.
Overall, the proportion of people who own a home is the greatest percentage compared to the proportion of social renting, private renting, and social housing in both 1991 and 2007 with approximately %55 and %70 respectively. In some countries people spend long hours at work. Why does this happen? Is it positive or negative development
You should write at least 250 words.
People spend more hours at work in some countries compared to others because of several reasons such as lack of deterrent regulations and high cost of living. While some people argue that working long hours has more positive effects rather than negative ones, others argue that it is a negative development. In my opinion, working more than overall 8 hours in a day cannot be a positive development.
Firstly, employers in some countries force their workers to spend long hours at work due to the lack of deterrent regulations in these countries. In developed countries, there are some certain rules provided by law and regulations which restrain the amount of time that an employee can work. In case this limit is exceeded, the employer can face legal sanctions. In these types of workplaces, working long hours decreases the effectiveness and productivity of workers. In such cases, they even cannot spend time with their family or leisure. Thus, working long hours because of the lack of deterrent regulations is a negative development for workers.
Another reason why people spend long hours at work is that they can earn enough money only in case they work longer. In some developing and undeveloped countries, the minimum wage is not enough for people to meet their basic needs. In such cases, people spend more time to earn money. This also affects their life negatively because of the reason that they do not get the return for their effort. So, this situation does not negatively impact these workers only financially but also psychologically.
In conclusion, the reasons why people work long hours than it should be may differ. The lack of deterrent regulations against employers and the high cost of living are two reasons behind working long hours. Whatever the reason, working long hours cannot be regarded as a positive development.
