Writing Task 1

The given graph displays information regarding the number of enquiries made at a Tourist Infromation Office in a city. The data has been collected over a span of six months in the year 2011.

The different means by which enquiries were made are by letters or e-mail, by calling on telephones or by visiting the office in person.

The most common method of enquiring was via telephones, with around 6700 enquiries being made at the office via telephones. The number of enquiries made this way remained fairly similar during the first four months of the year, but a steep increase was observed in the months of May and June.

Many poeple also chose to directly visit the office to solve their quiries, the total being over 6300. While in the first two months, the number of people visiting the center was lower compared to the other two methods, it increased gradually as the year set in, and was the most common method of making enquiries in the last three months of the survey.

The least common approach taken by people was to send letters or e-mails. A gradual decrease can be observed in the number of enquiries being made via mail or electronic mail through the survey period. In the months of may and june, the number of people enquiring through mail had dropped to over a 1000 below both enquiries made by telephone and in-person. The largest difference was seen in the month of June, where only about 350 enquiries were made through mail, compared to around 1500 by telephone, and well over 1800 people went to the office themselves.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Individuals can do nothing to improve the environment; only governments and large companies can make a difference.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

I am more inclined to disagree with the notion that individuals can't do anything to improve the environment. I believe that as citizens of this world, we have a duty to protect and preserve it's blessings. Change can only be brought forth from within, and this change can inspire others to induce changes in themselves as well.

As individuals, we unknowingly contribute to damaging the environment on a daily basis. The cars we drive on a daily basis emit fumes that are harmful to the atmosphere. We drink out of plastic bottles and eat from plastic plates, and in many cases don't dispose them properly. Plastics especially are very harmful to nature, as they don't degrade and can persist in nature for decades. It is possible to introduce small changes into our lives, which if achieved on a community basis, can improve the environment. We can use paper plates or leaves instead of plastic plates. Modern technology has also helped develop many environmentally freindly means of transport, such as electric bikes and cars. Walking or cycling over short distances can also help in reducing harmful emissions. On the other hand, govrnments and big companies also have to accept blame for their actions. Improper waste disposal by governments and municipalities has lead to creation landfills which have rendered large areas of land useless and uninhabitable. It has also become common practice to dispose off sewage into natural water bodies such as lakes and rivers. Factories are also responsible for emitting large amounts of harmful gases into the atmosphere and improper disposal of toxic substanes. All of these actions have lead to the deterioration of the environment.

It is important that we improve the environment, for the sake of the planet and ourselves. I believe that change can be intoduced in oneself, which can inspire others to make changes as well.
