Task 2
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
Write about the following topic.
To meet the growing need for food to support an increasing population, a country should make use of edible insects as a food source. However, some people believe that insects are not only unhealthy but harvesting them will also negatively affect nature. What are the benefits and drawbacks of eating insects?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
You should write at least 250 words.
The world is ever-changing in order to tone with its continuously evolving population. A growing number of citizens means higher demand to fulfill the need for food. As food sources are becoming limited, alternatives for edible consumption are definitely required. Insects, for example, are one option to solve this issue.
Classified as edible, some insects might be a decent substitute for food limitation, depending on how a person sees it. A standardised method of processing consumable insect-based would be a problem-solving solution to decreasing supplies of human need. With it becoming quite a popular street food in some countries like Thailand, proving that the market is already there although still very niche at the moment.
However in most cases, people see insects in a negative point of view. These creatures are often seen as harmful pests which carry dirt due to their uncertain habitat. Not only the questionable hygiene that could lead to diseases, its familiarity to be categorised as food are also still poor. Moreover, mass harvesting is likely to become a boomerang for the world we live in, as free hunting of these creatures will bring imbalance to the ecosystem resulting in another issue for mother nature.
To sum up, there should be a fixed quality standard in eliminating the bad sides of including edible insects as a source of food. When harvested rationally and sterilely, it could be considered a great solution to the market. While if done carefreely, could bring another problem to the population and the already issued matter.
