1. Accommodation
Renting a house in developed countries, including the US is very expensive. Rents are up to $167-$418 per week for a private house. Homestay would be a better option to save money if you were lucky to find a friendly host, which can make your life easier. The best and safest solution would be living in the dormitory. You can cut out travel time as it is located within the school campus. Living in the dorms is also considered to be safer.
Details:
Types | Per year |
---|---|
Share house | More than $12.000 |
Homestay (living with natives) | $10,000 – $12,000 |
Dormitory | $10,000 – $15,000 |
2. Cost of living
The cost of living includes: house rent, utility bill (electricity, water and gas), etc.
Some helpful tips for international students to save money: stay in a share house, cook for yourself and buy in bulk. The monthly (average) cost of food for international students is usually between $300 – $700, depending on the city where you live.
Typically big supermarkets often offer great deals which can save you a great deal of money. Listed below are three supermarkets in the US that Vietnamese students highly recommend:
WinCo: a supermarket chain that has warehouse-style store with low prices. To cut the cost, WinCo has limited employee; they don’t accept credit cards and ask customers to self check-out.
Aldi: the common company brand name of two German multinational family-owned discount supermarket chains that sells food with low prices, including snacks and instant food..
Costo: sells Kirkland products at lower prices than similar products at other stores.
Travel fees should be considered in the cost of living as well. In the US, the public transport system is well-developed. Although each state offers different prices, all international students can get a discount. Travelling by taxi is very expensive, so the students are encouraged to use public transport. Travel around school can cost you $50 – $100 on average.
3. Tuition fees
The tuition fees will depend on education level, location, field of study, public or private school. An average tuition fee is between $10.000-$30.000 / year. Coursebooks or other materials are quite expensive, which can cost $80 – $200. Some students search for bargains and buy secondhand materials.
