Review & Explanations:

Part 1: Questions 1-10

Questions 1-5

Complete the form.

Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS OR NUMBERS for each answer.

Survey Form

Dealing with: exercise (Example)

Time contacted: 1

Suburb: 2

Age Group: 3

Occupation: 4

Family: 5

  • 1 Answer: 10.25 (am)

    Q1:

    • The main keyword in Q1 is “time contacted”.

    • We can assume from the question that the answer may refer to the time that the rep. contacted the person.

    • The rep. mentioned two time points: 10:25 and 10:30. However, only 10:25 is the correct answer as we have already confirmed that the answer may refers to the time that the rep. contacted the person. 10:30, on the other hand, refers to the time that the survey will be all over, so it couldn’t be the correct answer.

    • You may also be confused when the rep. said that “this will only take about four minutes”. As we’ve mentioned before, the answer may refers to the time that the rep. contacted the person; therefore, such couldn’t be the right answer by any ways.

  • 2 Answer: Box Hill

    Q2:

    • The main keyword in Q2 is “suburb”.

    • The rep. mentioned two places: Blackburn and Box Hills. However, you can realise that Blackburn is not the correct answer if you listen carefully (because Blackburn is just close to the place that the person lives (“That’s close to me”)). The correct answer, in this case, is the latter one (Box Hills).

  • 3 Answer: 30 to 39

    Q3:

    • The main keyword in Q3 is “age group”.

    • We can assume from the question that the answer may refer to the age range of that person.

    • You may mistake “40 to 49” as the correct answer if you don’t listen carefully and hastily write down what you heard at first (because the person told the rep. to put him in the 40 to 49 age group). Note that there are some phrases in the talk proving that he hasn’t turned 40 yet (“I’ll turn 40 in a few months”,” that’s in a few months”), so you need to hear the following in order to find out the correct answer.

    • In this case, the correct answer should be “30 to 39” as the rep. later confirmed that the person is in the 30 to 39.

  • 4 Answer: domestic duties

    Q4:

    • The main keyword in Q4 is “occupation”.

    • We can assume from the question that the answer may refer to the job that the person is currently having.

    • There are many false answers in this question which may cause you to choose the wrong answer if you don’t listen carefully. In this case, the last mentioned occupation (“domestic duties”) is the correct answer as the person asked the rep. to write down directly (the word “put” signifies such thing). The other jobs aren’t what that person is currently doing, some of which aren’t even related to that person (housewife and teacher are other people’s jobs; teaching cookery and being a cook are what that person used to do and want to do).

  • 5 Answer: married, no children

    Q5:

    • The main keyword in Q5 is “family”.

    • We can assume from the question that the answer may refer to that person’s family status.

    • Similar to Q4, there are many false answers in this question which may cause you to choose the wrong answer if you don’t listen carefully. In this case, “married, no children” is the correct answer since the person asked the rep. to write down directly (the word “put” signifies such thing). The other statuses aren’t relevant to that person (“single mother” is for the last customer, and “married with children” is for the rep. himself).

Questions 6-10

Complete the summary.

Write ONE WORD ONLY for each answer.

The subject undertakes exercise by regularly 6  She does yoga in order to relax
and 7 her muscles. When she was younger, she would 8 , and in the future, she
may go 9 although that will depend on whether she has enough 10 .

  • 6 Answer: walking

    Q6:

    • The main keywords in Q6 are “exercise” and “regularly”.

    • We can assume from the question that the answer may refer to a type of exercise that the person does mostly.

    • The person mentioned two types of exercise, cleaning and walking. However, cleaning is what her husband does, as she said, so you should choose walking as your correct answer since she said that she did that very often (the phrase “very often” is similar to the keyword “regularly” in meaning).

    • Remember to use the correct form of verb because the person didn’t say “walking”, but using the infinitive form of the answer (“walk”). Writing “walk” to your answer sheet may cause your answer to be unaccepted.

  • 7 Answer: tighten

    Q7:

    • The main keywords in Q7 are “yoga” and “muscles”.

    • We can assume from the question that the answer may refer to a benefit regarding muscles when that person does yoga.

    • The answer (which is “tighten”) is quite noticeable as that person said it directly and clearly. Note that the summary has already mentioned that the person does yoga in order to relax, so you shouldn’t write down that word to your answer sheet. Otherwise, you’ll lose an easy point.

  • 8 Answer: hike

    Q8:

    • The main keyword in Q8 is “younger”.

    • We can assume from the question that the answer may refer to an activity that the person did when she was younger.

    • There are two activities mentioned in the talk: playing basketball and hiking. However, the question focuses on the person, so you should also focus on what the person talked about herself. Anything done by other people shouldn’t be paid attention to.

    • You may mistake basketball as the correct answer since there was the keyword “younger” accompanied with that false answer. Note that the person was talking about her husband before she mentioned the activity she used to do (“When he was younger he was in a basketball team”). The phrase “I never participated” proves that basketball wasn’t what she used to do and thus not the correct answer.

    • In this case, “hike” is the correct answer to this question. The phrase “used to” signifies that she did that activity when she was younger.

  • 9 Answer: swimming

    Q9:

    • The main keyword in Q9 is “future”.

    • We can assume from the question that the answer may refer to an activity that the person hopes to do in the future.

    • The person mentioned three activities: doing modern dance, swimming, and jogging. However, the question focuses on the person, so you should also focus on what the person talked about herself. Anything done by other people shouldn’t be paid attention to.

    • In this case, “swimming” is the correct answer to this question. The phrase “but that’s never going to happen” following right after the person mentioned doing modern dance proves that it’s the wrong answer. Jogging, on the other hand, was what her husband thought they should do, so it’s also a wrong answer (the phrase “but that’s never going to happen” following right after it also proves that it is the wrong answer).

  • 10 Answer: energy

    Q10:

    • The main keyword in Q10 is “has enough”.

    • We can assume from the question that the answer may refer to something that the person needs to go swimming, and she should have enough of it.

    • The answer to this question (which is “energy”) is quite easy to notice as the person said it clearly. However, the fact that words and phrases leading you to the answer (“but if” and “left over”) stand too close to it may pose some difficulties, so you need to listen carefully.

Noted: The person did mention in the talk that she would be “starting this job as a cook”, but you shouldn’t pay attention to such trivial thing since it doesn’t related to what you should write down to your answer sheet.

SECTION 1

You will hear a survey company representative ringing a person to obtain some information.

Rep.: Hello?

Person: Hello? Who is this?

Rep.: Hello. I’m a representative of the Tallyho Survey Company, and I’d like to ask you a few questions regarding exercise.

Person: Oh, that’s an interesting subject.

Rep.: Yes, we think so, too.

Person: But I’m afraid I’m a bit busy at the moment.

Rep.: Don’t worry. This will only take about four minutes at the most. It’s 10:25 now, so it will all be over by 10:30.

Person: Well ... alright, if it’s that short.

Rep.: It will be. So, one of the first things I need to know is where you are — that is, which suburb or area of the city? The last client was in Blackburn, for example.

Person: Blackburn. That’s close to me. I’m in Box Hill.

Rep.:Another eastern suburb then. I have a friend in Box Hill, too. Interesting place. Now, I need your approximate age for this survey. Are you younger than 20, between 20 and 29, 30 and 39, and so on?

Person: I’ll turn 40 in a few months, so that puts me in the 40 to 49 age group.

Rep.: Well, that’s in a few months, so right now you’re in the 30 to 39.

Person: Oh, right. So put that then.

Rep.: Okay. Now, I need to know your occupation. The last caller was a housewife, for example; the one before that a teacher.

Person: I used to be a teacher, too, teaching cookery.

Rep.: And now?

Person: Now you can just put ‘domestic duties’. Actually, I hope to begin a new job soon, as a cook, but that won’t be for some time yet. I have to wait for my husband’s restaurant to open.

Rep.: Cook? That sounds interesting, but it’s ‘domestic duties’ for now. Okay, that just leaves some information about your family. This is not obligatory at all, so if you don’t want to answer, that’s fine.

Person: What sort of information, exactly?

Rep.: Oh, it’s very broad. Married, with children; single mother, that sort of thing. The last customer said she was a single mother.

Person: I’m married, and not a mother. Put ‘married, no children’.

Rep.: I’m married with children, myself. But I’ll put in your details, and that finishes the profile, and just l eaves the actual survey itself, if you’re ready to proceed.

Rep.: Alright, let’s begin the survey now, about your exercise habits.

Person: I’m afraid I don’t exercise much at all.

Rep.: Well, the main question is in what form you take your exercise, however little that may be — for example, in just cleaning. Do you clean the house?

Person: My husband does the cleaning, actually, but I walk to the supermarket and shops very often, up to four times a week.

Rep.: I’ll put that then, unless there’s something else.

Person: Nothing else, really. But I diet. I’m very strict about what I eat. Oh, and I do yoga, although that’s not very energetic—more a form of relaxation, and to tighten my muscles.

Rep.: They’re both important, of course, but what about sport? Do you undertake any sporting activities? This could be very infrequent. In the past, for example.

Person: My husband plays basketball at the local school, and I sometimes watch. When he was younger he was in a basketball team, but I never participated.

Rep.: Have you done anything at all?

Person: I used to hike in a nearby national park.

Rep.: Well that’s a definite physical activity, so I’ll put that—but not basketball. Alright, that just leaves future exercise intentions. Do you plan, or expect to do, at some stage, any form of exercise?

Person: I once dreamt of doing modern dance, but that’s never going to happen. Realistically, I’m thinking about going swimming, at the local aquatic centre, although my husband thinks we should just jog. I can’t see myself doing that, though—too tiring.

Rep.: I can understand. I used to jog, too, and it really makes you sweat. I’d say swimming’s a much better option.

Person: But I’ll be starting this job as a cook in my husband’s restaurant. I imagine I’ll be very tired doing all those late shifts. But if I have any energy left over, I might go to the aquatic centre to release some stress.

Rep.: Alright. Well, that’s the end of the survey. Thank you very much for your time.
