Part 1: Questions 1-10

Questions 1-6

Complete the notes.

Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS OR A NUMBER for each answer.

School Excursion

Day: Wednesday (Example)

Destination: 1

Weather: 2

Arrival time: 3

Activities Planned

See: 4

Eat: Catered lunch

Attend: 5

Return time: 6

  • 1 Answer: (the) Animal Park

Q1: The key word is “Destination”.

    • The sign of the keyword appears when Andrew said “And where are we going?”.

    • Right after that, Katie answered as “this time we’re going to the... Animal Park”.

So the answer for Q1 must be “Animal Park”.

Note: Katie also mentioned about Arthur Island in the conversation, yet they went there last month. So “Arthur Island” can’t be the answer.

  • 2 Answer: Cold and cloudy

    Q2: The keyword is “weather

    • The keyword appears as Andrew mentioned about the weather right after they decide where to go on their excursion.

    • Katie then mentioned about weather on the forecast as “Monday will be sunny”; “Tuesday we’ll have some showers” and “but by Wednesday, the day of our excursion, it will be... well, their words are ‘cold and cloudy’.

    • There are lot of information about the weather, we must be listen carefully. Since their excursion is on Wednesday,

The answer for Q2 have to be “cold and cloudy’

  • 3 Answer: 10.15 am

Q3: The keyword is “Arrival time”.

    • The sentence that can lead us to the keyword is when Andrew asked that “And what time will we get there?”.

    • Katie then answered as “we arrive at 10 am”. This can make us assume that the answer for Q3 is “10 am”.

    • However, Katie quickly corrected her mistake as “sorry, with the 15 minutes break, that will actually be 10.15 am”.

Therefore, the answer for Q3 must be “10.15 am”.

  • 4 Answer: Birds of prey

Q4: The keywords are “Activities Planned” and “See”.

    • In the conversation, we hear all these keywords mentioned as “all our students can see the animals” by Andrew and “one fun event planned”.

    • As Katie said that “Well, one fun event planned that day is ‘Birds of Prey’

So obviously the answer for Q4 is ‘Birds of Prey’

  • 5 Answer: (the) reptile display

    Q5: The keywords is “Attend”.

    • Between Q4 and Q5, the table mention that they would eat catered lunch which was said in the conversation by Katie as “There’s a catered lunch, at the park restaurant”. From here, we would expect to hear the answer for Q5.

    • From the question, we can assume that the answer must be an event.

    • There were 2 events mentioned by Katie “Reptile Display” and “Koala Handling”. However, since the weather wouldn’t support “Koala Handling” as given by forecast. So Katie suggested that they better choose the reptile display.

Hence, “the reptile display” is correct answer for Q5

  • 6 Answer: 6.30 pm

Q6: The keyword is “Return time”.

We hear the sign when Andrew asked “then we get back. What time will that be?

Katie then said that “so we won't get back until well after 6pm. It will most likely be 6.30”. This means that they would get back at 6.30pm.

So the answer for Q6 is ‘6.30’

Note: As listening to the conversation, we may confuse of “4.30” and “6pm”. But by listening carefully, obviously these can’t be the answer.

Questions 7-10

Complete the table.

Write ONE WORD ONLY for each answer.

  • 7 Answer: Chinese

    Q7: The keyword for Q7 is “26%

    • The topic “Nationality” of their students started by Katie. From the table of Q7-10, we know that the focus is on nationality proportion of students’ number.

    • The needed information is from Andrew as Chinese who constitute the majority, but only just”. Although we don’t know exactly the breakdown, 26% is the largest number of all in the table.

Hence, “Chinese” is the answer for Q7

    Note:

    • only just” here can be understood as “Chinese is the majority, but it proportion is not quite considerable compared to other nationality”.

    • Another information to support the answer “26%” can be seen when we hear Andrew stated the exactly number of Japanese, which was the second, as “a quarter of the whole” (25%)

  • 8 Answer: Japanese

    Q8: The keywords for Q8 is “25%”.

    • In the conversation, Andrew said that “it’s actually the Japanese, quite close behind”. Since the table is sorted decreasingly from the top to bottom down, we may assume “Japanese” is the answer for Q8.

    • In addition, Andrew then stated “Japanese are a quarter of the whole, which is considerable”. “a quarter of the whole” is “25%”.

Therefore, Japanese is the answer for Q8

  • 9 Answer: Korean(s)

    Q9: The keyword is “16%”.

    • The sign of the keyword appears when Andrew talked about Japanese as “Last year they were only 16%, so that market has grown nicely”. Japanese may be mistaken as an answer, but actually “16%” is the data from last year and it has grown. Therefore, we eliminate Japanese as an answer for Q9.

    • As Andrew kept saying, he mentioned about Indonesians and Koreans. Specifically, he said “Indonesians at 15% (this fits the information on the table) and “Koreans are a little higher”. From here, we have enough data to deduce that Koreans are more than 15%. And 16% are the only number in the table left in the table that greater than 15.

Thus, the answer for Q9 is “Koreans”.

  • 10 Answer: Thai

    Q10: The keywords for Q10 is “8%”.

    • From the table, we know the number of Saudi students is 7% and other nationalities is 3%.

    • In the conversation, Andrew stated that “like the Saudi and Thai student numbers, almost the same also - both just under 10” and “Thai students number just a fraction more”. We can deduce that Thai students must be more than 7%, but only just. Combining with the information left on the table, we conclude that Thai students must be 8%.

So the answer for Q10 is “Thai”.

SECTION 1

You will hear two teachers, Andrew:and Katie, discussing the coming excursion of their language
class.

Andrew: Well, we have this school excursion planned, but when exactly is it? Is it this Tuesday or Wednesday?

Katie: Well it can’t be Tuesday, with the English tests taking place.

Andrew: Ah, right. Not Tuesday, but Wednesday.

Katie: That’s right - all day Wednesday - taking a bus outside the city.

Andrew: And where are we going?

Katie: Ah, last month we went to Arthur Island, so this time we’re going to the... Animal Park.

Andrew: Arthur Island was okay, but it was too cold. Let’s hope the weather for this week’s excursion is better. I don’t suppose animals care about bad weather, but I certainly do. Have you heard the forecast?

Katie: Yes, and it’s not too bad. Basically, they’re saying Monday will be sunny.

Andrew:Good...

Katie: But then the weather will change.

Andrew: Not so good.

Katie: Yes, Tuesday we’ll have some showers, but by Wednesday, the day of our excursion, it will be... well, their words are ‘cold and cloudy’.

Andrew: Cold and cloudy. Well, as long as it isn’t ‘wet and rainy’, I’m happy enough. We won’t need umbrellas, just warm clothing. And what time will we get there?

Katie: Let’s see. The bus picks us up at 8.30 am, and then it’s an hour and a half on the road, so we
arrive at 10 am... sorry, with the 15 minutes break, that will actually be 10.15 am.

Andrew: That’s early enough. Then all our students can see the animals, have their fun, and do whatever they want to do.

Katie: Well, one fun event planned that day is ‘Birds of Prey’.

Andrew: What’s that?

Katie: That’s when they bring out several birds of prey: eagles, falcons, kites, those sorts of birds, and throw pieces of meat into the air, and the birds swoop down and eat them. It’s quite impressive.

Andrew: Sounds great. ‘Birds of Prey’. Are there any other activities?

Katie: There’s a catered lunch, at the park restaurant. We’ve already paid for that, and in the afternoon there’s... well, I had a choice between the ‘Reptile Display’ and the ‘Koala Handling’. In the reptile display, the students can handle live pythons and various other snakes.

Andrew:Surely they’d rather hold koalas?

Katie: I’m sure, but the koalas can’t be handled unless the weather’s sunny, and given the forecast, I thought it better to choose the reptile display.

Andrew:Ummm, that’s a shame. These Asian students would love the ‘Koala Handling’.

Katie: Yes, I know, but we can’t control the weather. Andrew:And, then we get back. What time will that be?

Katie: We leave the park at 4.30, but then we face traffic, so wo won't get back until well after 6pm. It will most likely be 6.30. But that’s better than the last trip: we didn’t get home until 8.30 that time.

Andrew:Yes, that was a bit too late, wasn’t it?

Katie: Andrew, I understand you’ve been doing some research regarding the breakdown, by nationality of our student body. That must have produced some interesting results.

Andrew: You’re right. I got some statistics from head office.

Katie: I would imagine that most of our students are either Japanese or Chinese.

Andrew: You imagine right. But it’s the Chinese who constitute the majority , but only just. I had thought Koreans might be second, but it’s actually the Japanese, quite close behind. It’s somewhat surprising, but obviously all those Study Tours that our university markets in Japan are bringing in students.

Katie: What’s the breakdown exactly?

Andrew: Japanese are a quarter of the whole, which is considerable. Last year they were only 16%, so that market has grown nicely. Ah, the only other proportions of some weight are the Indonesians and Koreans - about the same. Indonesians at 15%, and... ah... the Koreans are a little higher -not like last year when they were less than 10%.

Katie: I thought we’d have more Indonesians than Koreans?

Andrew: Well, as I said, they’re about the same - just like the Saudi and Thai student numbers, almost the same also - both just under 10.

Katie: Which one is bigger?

Andrew: Ah, Thai students number just a fraction more. As for the other nationalities, collectively they’re only 3%, so it wasn’t worth giving each of them a separate category. I just grouped them under ‘other’ - that’s Vietnamese, South American, a couple of Russians, and so on.
