Note: Q11. The text: “These days, lenses are most commonly a plastic polycarbonate material, offering lower weight and higher scratch resistance, as well as the ability to screen out harmful ultraviolet and infrared rays from the sun. Similarly, the frames are flexible and lightweight, offering less friction and irritation for the skin…” indicates us that modern lenses are lower weigh. So, the answer B “heavier” is wrong. In addition, attributes “flexible” and “lightweight” (soft) are mentioned in the text. However, these attributes are of frames, not of modern lens. So, C and D cannot be the correct answer. After eliminating the wrong answers, we can guess the best answer is A. Besides, the text “…the ability to screen out harmful ultraviolet and infrared rays from the sun” implies that modern lens are safer. Therefore, the answer is surely A |

Note: Q12. The text doesn’t refer to either the popularity or the recommendation of “off-the-shelf” glasses; so, the answer A and D is not suitable. It does mention that there is no eye examination if we buy glasses “off the shelf”, but not completely imply that these glasses can cause eyes’ problems such as glaucoma. So, we eliminate the incorrect answer B The text “…cashing in on the need for quick solutions that people want in a busy society…” shows us the best answer must be C |

| The lace of the future may well be ‘laser eye surgery’. In this process, laser beams are used, usually to alter the curvature of the cornea and thus provide long-term corrective benefits. Although straightforward enough and increasingly safe and affordable, given the delicacy of the eye, there remains a small risk of failure and resultant vision problems, such as ghosting or halos. It is an interesting fact, that, despite the growth of such surgery, and the use of contacts, traditional lenses remain as popular as ever. Nothing, it seems, can match the simple convenience of putting on a pair of glasses. |
Note: Q13. The content of “laser eye surgery” is mentioned in the last paragraph. We can make the mistake when seeing the text “…provide long-term corrective benefits…” and ignore the answer A because we easily think that “long-term benefits” has the opposite meaning with “limited benefits”. However, the answer A is correct. In fact, besides benefits (straightforward, safe and affordable), laser eye surgery “remains a small risk of failure and resultant vision problems..” which indicates that “laser eye surgery” has limited advantages. The word "straightforward” and the text “…traditional lenses remain as popular as ever. Nothing, it seems, can match the simple convenience of putting on a pair of glasses...” help us realize the answers B, C and D are incorrect. |
You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 1-13, which are based on Reading Passage One.
The human eye was not designed for the years of intensive book learning that are now common in modern society. The result is eye strain and deterioration, often at an early age, but this same society has provided the obvious answer: corrective lensed eyeglasses. Ubiquitous and everpresent, coming in all styles, colours, and designs, the optical correction of faulty vision with these devices is a phase which probably everyone will have to face at some stage in their lives.
It is not surprising that the first eyeglasses were made by the Catholic monks dedicated to the writing, translation, and reproduction of finely written religious texts. In contrast to the general undereducation and illiteracy of the times, these monks were versed in many languages, and worked for years in badly-illuminated candle-lit ‘scriptoriums’ - an effort which took its toll on their eyesight. Thus, the earliest pictorial evidence for the use of eyeglasses is a 1352 portrait of the Catholic cardinal, Hugh de Provence. However, the usefulness of glasses had already long been realised by the population at large, and by 1300 the trade of lens-grinding was widespread enough to require formal guilds and regulations.
Although popular and effective, no one was quite sure of the mechanics of it all. The first detailed mathematical explanation would not come until Johannes Kepler published his work on optics in 1604. Basically, glasses modify the focal length of the eye’s lens. There are two main focusing disorders: myopia and hyperopia. In the case of the first (near-sightedness, in which it is difficult to see objects at a distance), concave lenses are used, compensating for the eye’s refractive error by pushing the focal point back, to the retina. Hyperopia (far-sightedness) uses convex lenses to do the opposite, bringing the focal point forward, to the retina.
Yet, to accommodate the range of situations in which clear vision is needed, from reading books and computer monitors, to television watching and driving cars, some glasses are equipped with more than one lens type. The most common are bi-focal lenses, with two distinct horizontal viewing areas. A conscious effort is thus necessary to focus through the band of the lens necessary to solve the visual challenge faced. A variation which helps with this are lenses which allow progressive transitions, rather than distinct changes between viewing angles. The simplest system of all is to merely have several pairs of glasses, reserving them for specific tasks.
These days, lenses are most commonly a plastic polycarbonate material, offering lower weight and higher scratch resistance, as well as the ability to screen out harmful ultraviolet and infrared rays from the sun. Similarly, the frames are flexible and lightweight, offering less friction and irritation for the skin. Nevertheless, glasses cannot be said to be convenient devices. Grease, dirt, sweat, and vapour can streak them when eating or cooking, or from natural condensation due to temperature changes (such as when exiting a heated building into the colder outdoors). Glasses are also awkward during fast-motion sports or labouring jobs, are rather easily broken, and not cheap to repair.
Obviously then, contact lenses have considerable advantages. These are inserted directly over the pupil, and have the additional benefit of a perceived aesthetic appeal. Traditional glasses are sometimes seen as unfashionable, carrying associations of age or infirmity. The almost invisible contacts avoid this, which is perhaps one reason why most wearers are female. Having said that, by completely covering the pupil, contacts also offer better peripheral vision, and are more appropriate for certain less common vision impairments. Their disadvantage is the difficulty and discomfort involved in putting them on and taking them off. They can also result in dryness and irritation.
Interestingly though, the modern era has seen eyeglasses become somewhat of a fashion accessory. The musicians Buddy Holly and John Lennon were so characterised by their glasses that their names have been given to the style they wore. Glasses can now even be bought ‘off the shelf’, without an eye examination, cashing in on the need for quick solutions that people want in a busy society. Although they are a source of much revenue, opticians advise people to first have proper eye examinations, not only to ensure the best results, but also for early detection of potential eye diseases, such as glaucoma, which might actually be the root cause of focusing problems.

Over the last two decades, massive development in technology industries has been giving a significant improvement to human life. Nowadays, people easily download legal music and books through internet platforms without charge. In this case, I am personally extent to that positive statement and the essay will be explained the reasons behind my statement.
First of all, modern technology has been helped many people to improve their capabilities. The musician is one of the people who get a lot of benefits from this development. Today, they only need an account on music platforms and stable internet to distribute their albums all over the world. It was a hundred percent different to the musician's condition in the 80s which had limited access to spread their creations. Even though the music platform can be entered freely, musicians still get income from this site for every listener of their songs. Besides, this technology also improves the musician's creativity in performance which allows them to hold a concert from different places by using online video conferences. It gives an opportunity for them to expand their song listeners across regions or countries.
On the other hand, the upgraded technology assists the researchers to gain a deeper understanding regarding the issues on their research topics. Using an internet connection, the researchers can find a hundred books and journals related to their study. Furthermore, it allows the researcher to do collaborative research and project with other researchers across countries. As a result, they can produce an international journal which may improve their reputation and career in the future.
In conclusion, modern technology is not just helping people to download books and music albums freely, but it also give a significant impact on others' incomes and science development.
The pie charts compare the proportion of two different groups in a European country on monthly expenditure. Overall, it is abundantly clear that low-income groups spend a lot of money on food and drink, while high-income groups buy many miscellaneous every month.
Taking a closer look at the low-class charts, almost a third of this group's earnings is used to buy food and drink. It is followed by fuel, miscellaneous, and recreational and cultural activities, each items send 24%, 18%, and 11%. On the other hand, the three other items only get a proportion under 10% each.
Moving to the high-class charts, this class spent 23% of monthly income on miscellaneous or 2% higher than recreational and cultural activities expenditure. In the next position, transportation, food and drink, and restaurant and hotel are followed by getting proportions of 21%, 15%, and 12%. Meanwhile, two other items (fuel and clothing) are collected under 8% of the total proportion.
In the information explosion, advanced technology has made it more convenient to access music and reading materials for free. I agree that this development brings benefits for people.
No doubt downloading free music and books from the Internet helps to economize money. It is more reasonable for listening to a copyrighted one than to purchase a CD because the cost for CD or other initial materials is expensive, especially for students to pay the fee. In addition, ever¬ accelerated updating of free documentaries let people on large scale approach. Although these cannot have the best quality like the first ones, they still fulfill the requirements of readers by the same contents, images, and sounds. Therefore, people can gain unlimited knowledge about the culture of other countries.
The other advantage is having a song or a book on the Internet helps to save time. With just a click on Google, we can search for many types of books and music. For a busy person, that is convenient, easy, and fast to update current affairs or relax after a busy week. For example, on Spotify, if individuals use a premium account, they have to take time for registering, reading some policies and rules while a free account does not require that. Moreover, free videos can make a person widely available. Social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, and other different networks allow a user to share information with their friends, which speed up the pace of videos or textbooks in a short time. For instance, a Vietnamese Youtuber whose name is Ba Tan Vlog became popular after one night because of her exciting video on Youtube.
To conclude, approaching free copyrighted music and documentaries is increasingly popular because it produces several advantages.
These days the advancement of technology has made everyone's living easy and comfortable. It is commonly observed that with the invention of latest digital technology , individuals can easily download many online resources such as reading material, music with copyright free of charge just by a click. This essay argues the positive and negative aspects of downloading coyright material online.
Using copyright materials from internet is beneficial in various ways as copyrighted work goes into public domain that means creator has surrendered their copyright, which can be used by anyone free of charge . For instance , about 90% of university students in their dissertation, use copyright articles, theories, quotes, videos and provide references. This is gretaly helping in research field as information is available withou any cost. Hence, the development of using patent information without spending any money is helping the community to a large extent expecially in education, research and technology innovation.
Despite the fact that copyright work is proving to be an advantage to community , there are some drawbacks of it. Some people misuse the information and claim that its their own work, which defames and takes the legal rights of the owner. In addition, they also download copyright patents, trademarks to create a their own business to get credit and profit. Hence , it is becoming difficult to prevent infringement of copyright in the long run.
To sum up, this essay has argued about how the copyrighted items is benefiting the society to a large extent, although there are some negative sides of it.

Task 2
Question
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
Modern technology has made it easier for individuals to download copyrighted music and books from the internet for no charge.
To what extent is this a positive or a negative development?
You should write at least 250 words.
Answer
Because of the advancement in technology and after the introduction of internet, it is possible now a days to download anything from online without any cost. So why to spend a money after such thing if it is freely available? Though, there are few negative points of it, i believe that somehow it is a positive development.
One of the biggest benefits of such thing is that, a person does not need to pay a price in order to read a book or to listen to music. No diversification would be there between a rich and a poor one because technology has made is accessible for everyone. It has eliminate the restriction that only a person with a lot of money can read expensive book. Academic books are way too costly now a days, so one of my friends could not buy this books due to dearth of money. But because of the internet, he could download it without any charge.
On the flip side, there are few notes which make it uncooperative. People have composed music and written a books after the hardwork of years and have uploaded on the internet in order to earn few bucks. But due to this technology they are not getting what they deserve. It takes moths of hardwork and patients to make a movie, but people leck it using such innovation.
In conclusion, though, this technological development has many negative points, but looking at the positive side it has made people's life easier. So, in short, it can be said an affirmative development.

The given pie charts illustrate the proportion of salary spent on different items by low and high income groups in one country in Europe.
Overall, it is clear that both the groups have stark differences in their household income expenditure on various items. Low income group spent more money on food and fuel whereas, recreational and cultural activities and transportation took major portion of expenses among high income group.
Among the lower income group, over one quarter (29%) of income was spent on food and drink and just under a quarter(24%) was spent on fuel. Recreational and cultural activities and; hotel and restaurant collectively used 15% of income, whereas the amount of money spent on transportation and clothing was 9% and 5% respectively. About 18% of income was reserved for miscellaneous expenditure.
Among the high income group, the amount of money spent on food and drink and fuel coolectively was under a quarter (22%) of the total income. The income spent on recreational and cultural activities was almost double(21%) of the low-income group. Same was the case for transportation where high income group spent almost double the income(16%)than the former group. Money spent on restaurant and hotel was 12% and clothing expenditure was more or less the same as low income group. But the miscellaneous spending incresed in this group to about 23%.
Writing task 2
Answer
Music and books are some of the items which are still popular among masses. Due to free availability of these items on the internet, the modern technology has made it possible to download them free of any charge. This essay will discuss why i believe that it can have both positive and negative impact.
There are several positive aspects of this development. Firstly, the people, who want to listen to the music or read books, do not have to pay for it due to the latest technology and it saves them money. Some applications, such as spotify, for instance, provide platform for people to listen millions of songs and download them for free. Secondly, such technology indirectly increases the listenership and readership, which would have been difficult otherwise. Lastly, some music companies also allow free downloads to promote their music. In short, it can help in saving people's money.
However, the negative development of such technology is that it promotes digital piracy. People without knowing the origin of these music and books may download from illegal platforms. Some of these platforms just steal the original work and provide it for free downloads on the internet, which affects the sale of these items. Such activities, indirectly, impact the earnings of musicians, singers and writers. These artists are not paid for their work due to these illegal downloads. Moreover, people also hesitate to spend money on the original content, if they know that these items are available for free. Surely, such technology can badly affect the income of singers and writers.
To conclude, the music and books can easily be downloaded due to the latest technology. In my opinion, if this technology is used wisely it can help both the consumers and the content producers; even though, it has both the negative and postive development.
PS: Kindly rate and evaluate these tasks. Any suggestion is appreciated.
