In recent times, the population is growing rapidly, so finding more food supplies is an urgent matter. In that situation, many countries have used insects as a food source. In this regard, there are both benefits and drawbacks of using insects as food.

In terms of benefits, it is estimated that there are more than 1,700 species of edible insects in the world. Many people consider insects to be a food rich in protein, fat, as well as essential vitamins such as iron and calcium. Eat insects. Insects may be common in some countries such as Laos, Thailand, Cambodia… About 95% of the Lao population likes to eat insects. In particular, Lao girls believe that eating ant eggs will help make their skin more beautiful. Therefore, the girls here often cook ant eggs with hot water leaf soup. It is not only the diet and nutrition but also a part of the culture here. According to a 2007 World Food Program report, about 40% of children are malnourished. Meanwhile, the Human Development Program report has shown that 40% of Lao children under the age of 5 are underweight. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has launched programs from insect breeding to commercialization and consumption to ensure sustainability.

In short, insects are a very rich source of nutrients. Some insects contain a lot of protein, vitamins and minerals. Furthermore, insect farming is a simple and low-cost option. In addition to nutritional value, insects open up the possibility of providing income and employment for farmers engaged in harvesting, growing, processing, transporting and selling food from insects. At the same time, insects are also a source of food to fight poverty. Therefore, it is necessary to have reasonable programs for insect breeding.

However, besides the benefits there are also disadvantages of using insects as food. Eating insects has a high risk of poisoning. Poisoning by insects has many causes. The first is because insects contain certain allergens. This is most noticeable in the pupae, a nutritious food, but many people have an allergic reaction after eating it. This is due to the body of each person, there are people who are not suitable for a certain substance in the pupae, so they are allergic. Second, insects caught in the wild, are not clean insects as many people think. On the body of many insects contain poisonous mushrooms, roundworms, fleas, lice, ticks... Therefore, when used as food, if not handled cleanly, it can lead to poisoning, even death.Besides, in order to get safe and quality products, one must have comprehensive studies with the process of raising, exploiting and processing fully, rather than catching in the wild and then processing. how you like. For example, to make canned food, one must carefully study which insects are suitable, how to process it, and what kind of additives to add, etc.

In short, eating insects properly and safely will provide a lot of benefits. However, while there have not been extensive and in-depth studies, when using insect dishes, people should only eat insects that have been used as familiar food such as pupae, locusts, bugs, etc. and say no to strange insects. In particular, when processing food, it is necessary to have a safe handling process, for example, you should wash insects with salt water, even alcohol to "destroy" all poisonous mushrooms, worms, lice... clinging to them. insect itself. When cooking, remember to cook, especially careful when using other ingredients.
