  • 1 Answer: 04196570156

    • the words which lead you to the answer are underlined.

    • the word/number you must write for the answer is marked.

    • words which you might wrongly think could be the answer are in italics.

    • The keyword concerned in Q1 must be “contact number”.

    • From the question, we can assume that the answer must be a series of numbers.

    • As the man asks the woman to tell him her contact information, the woman confirms that her telephone number is “04196570156”. Therefore, the answer for Q1 must be “04196570156”.

  • 2 Answer: post
    • The keywords concerned in Q2 must be “written quote” and “send by”.

    • From the question, we can assume that the answer must be method of sending documents.

    • The man offers the woman 2 options to send her the “quotation” (“quotation” ~ “written quote”), the 1st option is by email, the 2nd option is by post. Then, the woman decides to select “the latter”, which is the post. She even confirms her answer by stating that she would like to read the quotation on paper, rather than on computer, which the man happily accepts. Therefore, the answer for Q2 must be “post”.

Note: As the woman doesn’t explicitly state that she’d prefer to receive the quotation by post, students need to fully concentrate on the word “the latter”. Consequently, 2 problems arise:

    • Firstly, the students don’t know the meaning of the word “the latter”.

    • Secondly, the students don’t know which method is the 2nd option.

  • 3 Answer: 39 dollars/$39
    • The keywords concerned in Q3 must be “price for renting” and “daily”.

    • From the question, we can assume that the answer must be a number.

    • The woman wants to rent a caravan for a week within a $50 budget. Correspondingly, the man offers her the “Explorer”, which costs $39 daily. The woman happily agrees. Therefore, the answer for Q3 must be “$39” or “39 dollars”.

Note: There are 3 prices mentioned here, “$50”, “$39” and “$11”. Any misunderstanding or inattention may result in incorrect answer.

    • $50 is the woman’s personal budget.

    • $39 is the daily cost for the “Explorer”.

    • $11 is the difference between the woman’s expectation, which is $50, and the actual cost, which is $39.

  • 4 Answer: bed
    • The keywords concerned in Q4 must be “special requirements” and “extra”.

    • From the question, we can assume that the answer must be a noun.

    • The man asks the woman whether she has particular (“particular” = “special”) requirements for her room. In fact, the room has only one twin bed, whereas there are 3 people in total. Therefore, the woman proceeds to ask for an extra bed. Thus, the answer for Q4 must be “bed”.

  • 5 Answer: kitchen
    • The keywords concerned in Q5 must be “most important” and “facility”.

    • From the question, we can assume that the answer must be a noun.

    • The woman explicitly states that a kitchen is the most important in her opinion. Therefore, the answer for Q5 must be “kitchen”.

Note: In fact, the woman proceeds to say “of course the stove”. However, she doesn’t confirm that the stove is the most important. Thus, we can only make an assumption that she also wants a stove.

  • 6 Answer: heater
    • The keywords concerned in Q6 must be “extra equipment”.

    • From the question, we can assume that the answer must be a noun.

    • The woman suggests that she needs to have a heater. Therefore, the answer for Q6 must be “heater”.

  • 7 Answer: microwave
    • The keyword concerned in Q7 must be “as well as”.

    • From the question, we can assume that the answer must be a noun.

    • The woman proceeds to express her need of a microwave, apart from the heater. Thus, the answer for Q7 must be “microwave”.

Note: The man suggests adding a coffee maker to her room. However, a coffee maker is only an example that he gives to clarify that the woman can add things to her room, according to her personal needs. Therefore, the coffee maker is not a correct answer.

  • 8 Answer: airport
    • The keyword concerned in Q8 must be “pick up from”.

    • From the question, we can assume that the answer must be a noun.

The woman suggests that she wants to be picked up from the airport. The reason for this is because she is not familiar with the transport system. Therefore, the answer for Q8 must be “airport”.

Note: The man offers to pick them up from the city centre as his company is near the city centre and all vans should be taken from his company. However, the woman declines and suggests another option. Therefore, the answer cannot becity centre”.

  • 9 Answer: 49
    • The keywords concerned in Q9 must be “caravan driver” and “age”.

    • From the question, we can assume that the answer must be a number.

    • The woman gives the man her daughter’s information. However, as the company only accepts caravan drivers aged 25 or over, Chris cannot be the driver. Therefore, Caroline becomes the driver and she’s 49 years old. Therefore, the answer for Q9 must be 49.

Note: There are 3 numbers mentioned here: 19, 25 and 49. Any misunderstanding or inattention may result in incorrect answer.

    • 19: Chris’s age, who is too young to become a caravan driver.

    • 25: the minimum age a person should be to become a legitimate caravan driver, according to the company’s policy.

    • 49: Caroline’s age, who is the eligible caravan driver.

  • 10 Answer: Australia
    • The keywords concerned in Q10 must be “the registered licence” and “issued in”.

    • From the question, we can assume that the answer must be a country.

    • The woman states that she has 2 licences, one in America and one in Australia. However, the licence in Australia would be better for her to register the local one from the man’s country. Therefore, the answer for Q10 must be “Australia”. (Australia is where she's going to visit and it's also the man's country).

Note: The woman explicitly states that the licence in Australia would be better for her, and the man agrees. Therefore, she decides to use the licence issued in Australia. Therefore, America is an incorrect answer.

Hello, First Choice Car Rental! How may I help you?

Oh, good morning. Um, I’m calling for some information about your car renting services. I’m an American, and I will be going on a family holiday to your city from Ohio next month.

OK. no problem. It’s our pleasure to serve you. Could you please tell me your name and contact information first?

I’m Caroline, that’s C-A-R-O-L-I-N-E, and my telephone number is 04196570156

OK. I’ve got that. And how can I send you our quotation, if you are satisfied with our arrangement? Is email all right, or should I send it by post

The latter, please! I’m afraid I’d prefer to read it on paper.

That’s no problem.

I’m considering renting a caravan for a week, but I don’t really know the price range for it, since I haven’t rented any car through that method before. I think it should be within my budget of $50.

You know, we have various caravans at different renting prices, according to the class of vehicle, facilities inside, mileage, etc. I’d recommend the ‘Explorer’, taking your budget into consideration, which is of good value and will cost you $39 per day. Is that OK?

Of course, that’s fine for me! I know the ‘Explorer’. That could save me $11 each day! You know a family holiday will be costly. That van is perfect!

I’m glad that you like it. So do you have any particular requirements about your room in the van?

Um, how many beds are there?

One twin bed.

But there are three of us, my mum. daughter and me. So can we add another bed

No problem.

For the facilities, I think a kitchen is the most important, and of course the stove.

In our vans, such as ‘Explorer’, there are all the basic bedding materials you need, like pillows and blankets, as well as some equipment for daily life. And many things can be added into your room according to your needs, such as a coffee maker.

Well, I need to have a heater, in case it’ll be cold at night, and a microwave of course.

All right, I’ve taken notes of all these things. Actually, all our vans should be taken from our company, which is not too far from the city centre, so we can pick you up from the centre for free. Is that OK?

Oh, I’m afraid we’d better be picked up from the airport, as we are foreigners in your country and not familiar with the transport system. Is that alright?

Yes, it is no problem. With that comes the information for the insurance. I need the driver’s name and age.

That is my daughter Chris, who is 19, the youngest driver amongst us three.

I’m sorry, but our company only accepts caravan drivers aged 25 or over, according to our regulations. So...

Well, that would be me, Caroline, and I’m 49 years old.

And where was your driving licence issued? I mean the country.

I’ve got a licence in America, but I’ve also got one in Australia which is still valid. Is it better for me to register the local one from your country?

Yes, that might be better. So your registration number is...
