IELTS Speaking tips
Essential tips and exam information to help you prepare successfully for your IELTS speaking test.
- In Speaking, don’t try to give a prepared speech, or talk about a different topic from the one you are asked to discuss.
- Always speak directly to the Examiner, not to the recording equipment.
- Whenever you reply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ to the Examiner’s questions, add more details to your answer. In each case, aim to explain at least one point.
- Remember that you are not being tested on your general knowledge but on your ability to communicate effectively.
- Organize and link your ideas and sentences appropriately, talking clearly at normal speed and using a wide range of structures and vocabulary.
Make the most of your Speaking test:
- try to talk as much as you can
- talk as fluently as possible and be spontaneous
- relax, be confident and enjoy using your English
- develop your answers
- speak more than the examiner
- ask for clarification if necessary
- do not learn prepared answers; the examiner is trained to spot this and will change the question
- express your opinions; you will be assessed on your ability to communicate
- the examiner’s questions tend to be fairly predictable; practise at home and record yourself
