Review & Explanations:

Part 1: Questions 1-10

Questions 1-2

Questions 3-5

Choose the correct letter, A, B or C.

3

When Mrs Reynolds saw the thieves, she

  • A
  • B
  • C
Answer: C

Q3:

  • We have to find out what Mrs Reynolds did when she saw the thieves.

  • Mrs Reynolds lists all three options but we still do not know what her decision is.

  • Then, Mrs Reynolds says that she asked another woman to call the police. Note that Mrs Reynolds did not call the police herself.

  • After that, Mrs Reynolds got to the woman, which means that she went to help that woman. Therefore, the answer is C.

4

The elderly woman was

  • A
  • B
  • C
Answer: B

Q4:

  • We have to find out what state the elderly woman was in.

  • Mrs Reynolds was more upset than the woman was. Therefore, the elderly woman was not very upset, and option C is not correct.

  • The elderly woman was “all right”, “OK”, which means that she was unhurt. Therefore, the answer is B.

5

Which woman had once had her bag stolen in the past?

  • A
  • B
  • C
Answer: A

Q5:

  • The keywords in Q5 are “once”, “stolen in the past”. We have to find out who had been through a similar case before.

  • Mrs Reynolds is talking about how calm the elderly woman was. Mrs Reynolds also tells us that a similar case - it - had happened to her - the elderly woman - once before. That’s why the elderly woman was calm. Note that “her” here is the elderly woman.

  • Mrs Reynolds also talks about her friend, but she does not say anything about her friend’s bag being stolen before.

  • The answer is A.

Question 6

Choose TWO letters, A-F.

The bag contained

  • A
  • B
  • C
  • D
  • E
  • F
  • 6 Answer: A,E

    Q6:

    • The keywords in Q6 are “bag”, “contained”.

    • Mrs Reynolds asked the woman what she’d had in it - the bag.

    • It is clear that there was a purse in the bag. Therefore, option A is correct.

    • £15 were in the purse. The candidates would be confused between 15 and 50. Note that 15 is stressed on the second syllable, while 50 is stressed on the first syllable. There was also no cheque book or cards in the bag, so option B, C, D are not correct.

    • The door key was in the woman’s pocket, not in her bag. Option F is not correct. Meanwhile, Mrs Reynolds says that the woman had her bus pass taken, so the bus pass was in the bag. Therefore, option E is correct.

    • The answer is A, E (in either order).

Questions 7-10

Complete the table below.

Write NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER for each answer.

Age Build Hair colour Distinguishing marks
younger man about 17 7 8 none
older man About 9 medium brown a 10 on chin

  • 7 Answer: slim

    Q7:

    • The keyword in Q7 is “build” - the size and shape of a person’s body.

    • We can assume that the answer is an adjective.

    • Mrs Reynolds says that the younger man was neither very tall nor small, which means the man was not very tall and not small either. Tall or small is not correct.

    • According to Mrs Reynolds, the younger man was sort of “slim build”.

    • Therefore, the answer is slim.

    • Note: some adjectives commonly go with “build”: average, medium | slight, slim, thin | heavy, muscular, powerful, stocky, strong, thickset | athletic

  • 8 Answer: black

    Q8:

    • The keywords in Q8 are “hair colour”.

    • The answer is a noun/adjective used to indicate a colour.

    • Mrs Reynolds describes the younger man’s hair in detail. It is clear that he had black hair. Therefore, the answer is black.

  • 9 Answer: 35/ thirty five

    Q9:

    • The keyword in Q9 is “age”. We have to know how old the second man is.

    • The answer could be a number or number written in no more than two words.

    • Mrs Reynolds talks about how old the second man was compared to the first man. Therefore, we can guess that she is going to tell us the age. Then, Mrs Reynolds says that the man was about 35.

    • Therefore, the answer is 35. Because the answer could be no more than two words, thirty five is also accepted.

  • 10 Answer: (small) scar

    Q10:

    • The keyword in Q10 is “chin”.

    • The answer could be a noun or noun phrase consisting of no more than two words.

    • Mrs Reynolds tells us directly that the older man had a small scar on his chin. Therefore, the answer is (small) scar.

SECTION 1

M: Well, if you can just tell me everything you remember. It doesn’t matter how trivial it seems. What may seem unimportant to you may not be unimportant to us.

F: OK, I’ll do what I can, officer. Well, as I said, I’d just come out of the cinema on the High Street, so it was about eight o'clock . Just before 8 in fact. I’d been to see a film with a friend and she’d just gone off home. So I was just standing there wondering what to do, whether to go and have a cup of coffee somewhere or not. I was just standing there minding my own business when I suddenly heard someone shouting directly opposite me outside the library. Not screaming, just shouting. It sounded like the voice of an elderly woman. “They’ve got my bag! They’ve got my bag!”, she was shouting. Then these two men raced past me, going like the wind, straight down the street and round the corner into west street . It all happened so quickly I think they must have had a car waiting for them there because I heard one drive off at top speed. Well, I didn’t know what on earth to do; whether to try and chase them, whether to ring the police or whether to go and see if she was all right. Another woman was running up behind me so I shouted back at her to go and call the police . Anyway, when I got to the woman, she seemed to be all right, thank goodness . A bit shaken, but OK. I think I was much more upset than she was.

All in all, she was pretty calm . I don’t think I would have been, but apparently it had happened to her once before so maybe that’s why you know, I’ve got a friend who refuses to go out alone anywhere after six o'clock now. What’s this town coming to?

Well, anyway, she just kept saying, “I didn’t see a thing, I didn’t see a thing.” One of them had just pushed her from behind and as she put out her hand to steady herself, the other one had just taken the bag from under her arm. And then he raced off across the road. I asked her what she’d had in it, and she said she’d had her purse with about £15 in it, but no cheque book or cards or things like that. And luckily she had her front door key in her pocket. Oh. and she’d had her bus pass taken too.

M: Let’s get back to the two men, if we can. Just tell me everything you can remember about them.

F: Well, there was a younger one and an older one.

M: Well, let’s start with the younger one, shall we?

F: Well, age first then. He only looked about 17 - not more. Something like that. Neither very tall nor small. Sort of slim build. Not anybody you’d notice . Nothing particularly special about him. An ordinary-looking looking sort of bloke. He had curly black hair which was quite long. But apart from that, as I say, not someone you’d notice in a crowd. Nothing really distinct about him at all. But the other one, the older one, he was different.

M: Different?

F: Yes, different, I feel as if I’d know him anywhere again. I got more of a look at him because he ran across the road more slowly than the younger man . I remember being surprised because he was quite a bit older than the other one. I’d say about 35. Funny, because you don’t think of people of that age snatching handbags in broad daylight like that, do you? He was quite a bit smaller than the other man. And medium build.

M: What did he look like? You didn’t give the officer much information last night.

F: Well, I did get quite a good look at his face. No beard or the – clean shaven and quite smart-looking really. He had light brown hair cut very short. A sort of army haircut . And there was another thing. Thinking about it all last night over and over again, Pm almost sure he had a small scar on his chin. I didn’t tell the other policeman that last night, but in my mind each time I see his face, I can see one.

M: A scar on his chin? That could be important. Thank you, Mrs Reynolds. You’ve been really helpful. If you really think you’d recognize him again, then what we’d like you to do later this morning, if you can, is to come down to the police station and look at a few photographs for us…(Fade out)
