Review & Explanations:

Part 1: Questions 1-10

Questions 1-7

Complete the notes below.

Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER for each answer.

TRAVEL AGENCY

Example Answer
Name of tour: Magic One Day
Departure time: 1 on Saturdays
Return time: 6:00 p.m
Transportation: 2 or minibus
Group size: 15 – 25 tourists
Cost: 3 per person including 4
Peak season: tourists need to 5 2 days ahead.
Payment: 6
Reference number of tour: 7
  • 1 Answer: 8:00 a.m./8 a.m

    • The keywords concerned in Q1 must be “Departure time” and “on Saturdays”.

    • From the question, we can assume that the answer must be a certain time.

    • The tourist asks the clerk about the trip’s departure time, which the clerk proceeds to give details about the trip. The trip occurs every Saturday and departs at 8:00 o’clock in the morning. Therefore, the answer for Q1 must be “8:00 a.m”.

    Note:

    • There are 2 periods of time mentioned throughout the passage: the departure time and the return time. For more information, the trip departs at 8:00 o’clock in the morning and comes back at about 6:00 o’clock in the afternoon. If students do not fully concentrate on the keywords “depart” and “come back”, “6:00 p.m” should be mistakenly selected as the answer.

    • However, as “6:00 p.m” has already been filled in the table as the return time. Therefore, mistakes should not be made if the students are fully aware of the table’s information.

  • 2 Answer: coach

    • The keywords concerned in Q2 must be “transportation” and “minibus”.

    • From the question, we can assume that the answer must be a noun regarding means of transportation.

    • To answer the tourist’s enquiry about the type of transportation used, the clerk emphasizes that his agency offers 2 types of transportation: coach and minibus.

    • As “minibus” has already been filled in the table, “coach” should be the answer for Q2.

  • 3 Answer: 18 pounds

    • The keywords concerned in Q3 must be “cost” and “per person”.

    • From this question, we can assume that the answer must be a certain price.

    • The tourist asks the clerk about the tour price, which the clerk proceeds to state that it is 18 pounds per person. Therefore, the answer for Q3 must be “18 pounds”.

Note: The clerk gives information about the discount policy, which is 5%. As this information is quite irrelevant, students do not need to consider it.

  • 4 Answer: guide fee

    • The keywords concerned in Q4 must be “including”.

    • From this question, we can assume that the answer must be a certain kind of price.

    • The tourist wants to ask whether the lunch fee has been included in the price. Based on the clerk’s answer, it is inferred that the price includes the guide fee, not the lunch fee. Therefore, the answer for Q4 must be “guide fee”.

Note: It is tempting to select “lunch fee” as the answer for Q4. However, as the clerk emphasizes that the lunch fee is NOT INCLUDED, the answer must be the “guide fee”. Students’ inattention or misunderstanding may result in wrong answer.

  • 5 Answer: reserve a seat

    • The keywords concerned in Q5 must be “peak season” and “2 days ahead”.

    • From the question, we can assume that the answer for Q5 can be a verb or a phrase.

    • As the clerk insists that tourists need to reserve a seat at least 2 days before leaving so that their position can be ensured during peak season. Therefore, the answer for Q5 must be “reserve a seat”.

  • 6 Answer: cash

    • The keyword concerned in Q6 must be “payment”.

    • From the question, we can assume that the answer must be means of payment.

    • In order to answer the tourist’s enquiry about the payment method, the clerk emphasizes that the only payment method the agency accepts is cash. Therefore, the answer for Q6 must be “cash”.

  • 7 Answer: FC864

    • The keywords concerned in Q7 must be “reference number”.

    • From this question, we can assume that the answer must be a code or a series of numbers.

    • The clerk offers to give the tourist his reference number, which is FC864. Therefore, the answer for Q7 must be “FC864”.

Questions 8-10

Choose THREE letters, A-G.

Which THREE attractions can tourists visit at present in Edinburgh?

  • A
  • B
  • C
  • D
  • E
  • F
  • G
  • 8-10 Answer: B,E,F

    • The keyword concerned in Q8 must be “attractions”.

    • From this question, we can assume that the answer must be a place.

    • The first attraction that the clerk provides is the resort called Old Castles. Therefore, the answer for Q8 must be B.

Note: There are 2 problems in this particular situation:

    • Firstly, the students do not hear the phraseOld Castles” but only hear “Scottish Castles”. As “Castles” is repeated in option B, students may have enough grounds to make a wild guess.

    • Secondly, the students are able to hear both, but unable to figure out the answer. However, as the “Old Castles” is included in option B, the students should answer this question with ease.

    • Even though the City Hall can be considered as a tourist attraction, the visitors in this tour will not be able to visit there. Therefore, option A is eliminated.

    • Though St. Giles’ Cathedral can be regarded as a tourist attraction that the visitors will visit, this place is not an available option in this question. Therefore, do not waste time considering this information.

    • The zoo, in this passage, is only a location situated near the St. Giles’ Cathedral. Thus, it is not a tourist attraction that the visitors will visit. Therefore, option C is eliminated.

    • The third attraction that the tourists will visit is the Royal Palace. As this place is included in option E, option E must be a correct answer.

    •

The fourth attraction that the tourists will visit is the Seabird Centre. As this place is included in option F, option F must be a correct answer.

Note: The tourist mistakenly assumes that the Seabird Centre is the Aquarium. However, those are confirmed as different places by the clerk. Thus, the visitors will not visit the Aquarium. Therefore, option G is incorrect.

SECTION 1

Clerk: Good morning. Wonderful travel agency. How can I help you?

Tourist: Good morning. I’d like to know about the information about your short trip. What’s the name of the trip?

Clerk: Magic One Day.

Tourist: Right. Could you introduce me to the tour?

Clerk: Of course. And we will give you a 5% discount if you book the latest trip.

Tourist: Fine. When is the next one going?

Clerk: We have a trip every Saturday, which usually departs at 8:00 o’clock in the morning.

Tourist: And when will we come back?

Clerk: About 6:00 o’clock in the afternoon.

Tourist: Fine. How about the type of transportation ?

Clerk: We like to keep our tours small, so we offer a coach or a minibus .

Tourist: That’s great. So how many tourists are there in one group?

Clerk: Usually, we take about 15 to 20 tourists. But you know it is a peak time now, so the number is up to 25 tourists.

Tourist: Well, that sounds good. So how much is the tour price?

Clerk: As I said I will give you a 5% discount, so the cost is 18 pounds for each person.

Tourist: Great. Does it include lunch?

Clerk: No, but the guide fee has been included.

Tourist: Do I need to book a seat?

Clerk: Yes. At peak season, in order to ensure your position, seat reservation is needed. So the tourist has to reserve a seat at least two days before leaving.

Tourist: OK. And how about the deposits ?

Clerk: You don’t need to pay any fees in advance .

Tourist: Fine. How about payments? Cash or credit card?

Clerk: Because we collect money just before departing, the only payment we accept is cash.

Tourist: Fine. I see.

Clerk: That’s OK. And let me confirm you with your customer reference number.

Tourist: Fine.

Clerk: That is FC864.

Tourist: Right. I write it down.

Clerk. How about other things do you want to know?

Tourist: Er, yes. I’d like to know what attractions we will visit during the tour.

Clerk: Well, let me check the time schedule . We will start at 8 o’clock, and will arrive at Edinburgh about 10 o’clock. The first resort we will visit is Old Castles, the most famous Scottish castles . It is the home of the Scottish Crown Jewels the oldest Royal Regalia in Britain.

Tourist: Well. May I take photos?

Clerk: Of course.

Tourist: I heard that the City Hall is a good place. Will we go there?

Clerk: The next tour does not include that place.

Tourist: OK.

Clerk: And then we will go to see St. Giles’ Cathedral with 1,000 years history. It is renowned for its stained glass, Rieger organ and beautiful Thistle chapel.

Tourist: Great. Is it near to the zoo?

Clerk: Yes. After lunch you will visit Royal Palace. It is a good place to know about royal family’s life, but it has a rule with no photo.

Tourist: Right.

Clerk: But, you can pick some souvenirs in the local handicraft shops closed to the palace.

Tourist: Great.

Clerk: And about 4 o’clock, we will get to the Seabird Centre.

Tourist: Do you mean the aquarium ?

Clerk: No. They are different places.

Tourist: OK. Does it have an animal performance ?

Clerk: Sure. You can appreciate the play of dolphin and sea lion.

Tourist: It sounds good.

Clerk: About 6 o’clock we will return. If you need other information, please read our tour booklet .

Tourist: Fine. Thank you very much.

Clerk: You are welcome. Good-bye.

Tourist: Good-bye.
