[Alexander A] Writing Practice Test 813937

Task 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

You have a full-time job and you are also doing a part-time evening course.

You now find that you cannot continue the course.

Write a letter to your teachers. In your letter

describe the situation

explain why you cannot continue at this time

say what action you would like to take

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ................. ,

There are three main things to consider before writing your essay:

1. Tone (formal or informal)
Sometimes students are friendly with their tutors, but I think it would be better to write a formal letter. Start with your tutor’s surname (e.g. Dear Mr. Smith,) and end with “Yours sincerely,”. Avoid contractions (write “I am” instead of “I’m”), and avoid using informal idioms or expressions. Be polite rather than friendly.

2. Purpose
The main purpose of this letter is to inform your tutor that you are leaving the course. Make this clear straight away (e.g. I am writing to inform you that...). Then cover the three points, writing a short paragraph for each.

3. Ideas
I recommend spending a few minutes planning ideas for each of the task points before you start writing. You need to decide what the evening course is about, what your full-time job is, a reason why you are too busy with work to continue with the course, and whether you want to leave completely or perhaps continue at a later date.

You should write at least 150 words.

Writing task 1

Dear Mr. Smith,

my motive for writing this letter to you is to apprise you that i will be discontinuing the course for the time being due to some reasons.

Being an international student, it has been difficult for me to cope with the high standard of living in this country which was why i had to take up a full-time job to be able to foot my bills. However, i am beginning to face some difficulties merging my job and education and it is really taking a toll on me. I work in a restaurant and my employer was kind enough to let me knock off once it is 8pm. The journey to my house from the restaurant is quite far and i do not intend on taking the bus as i want to save any little tip I have. By this, time is always far gone by the time i get home to freshen up and leave for campus.

Also, i am sometimes exhausted by the time i get home as a result of the trekking such that i am unable to attend my evening classes and it has been affecting my grades.

In addition to the above, I would like to inform you that i will be taking a gap year so as to gather enough money to rent an apartment much closer to the school and also find a part-time. In that way, i will be able to have ample time for myself and my studies as well.

In sum, my taking a gap year might affect my intellect so i plead with you to give me some reading materials to be studying during my free periods so that i will not be lagging behind. By this, i will be able to bounce back to my feet almost immediately once i resume schooling again.

Yours sincerely,

Alexander Agboba

Task 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Nowadays we are producing more and more rubbish.

Why do you think this is happening?

What can governments do to help reduce the amount of rubbish produced?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

Writing task 2

Waste production is a global problem being experienced which is majorly due to increased industrialization and the continuous rise in the global population. Due to this, there has been an outrageous increase in the amount of rubbish being produced each passing day.

The rampant increase in the amount of waste produced can be attributed to the increasing availability of industries. Most industries produce non-recyclable products which have become a nuisance globally. For instance, almost every eatery or restaurant with take-away packages are in plastic containers which once used, cannot be reused. As a result of this, it becomes a waste product once the consumer finishes with its contents.

In addition, waste production is caused by the consistent use of paper for hygienic purposes. For instance, one washes and wipes one's hands with tissue paper after using the washroom. Had there been enough industries responsible for the production of sanitizers, the need for tissue papers would be less

The government should pass out a law that will see to it that all manufacturing industries will produce recyclable products rather than the non-recyclables so as to mitigate the quantity of rubbish produced daily. Moreover, the effectiveness of the law passed would be dependent on the follow ups made so governing bodies should establish agencies or organizations that will see to it that appropriate measures are put in place to curb the high rate of waste production. Furthermore, there can be a state-owned factory responsible mainly for the production of hand sanitizers for hygienic purposes.

In a scenario whereby the law has been passed and being enforced, the industries will supply only recyclables to restaurants. Also, people will be forced to dine-in rather than take-away which will also lessen the wasted being produced. The need for tissue papers would be less if sanitizers are placed in washrooms for cleansing.

To conclude, no country is devoid of waste production as there are industries producing products which cannot be used more than once. It is therefore a critical issue to be dealt with and if the appropriate measures are put in place, the high rate of waste production would be lessened.
