Q12-13. Which Two of the following statements are true according to Ekman’s theory?

A   No evidence shows animals have their own facial expressions.

B   The potential relationship between facial expression and state of mind exists.

C   Facial expressions are concerning different cultures.

D   Different areas on face convey a certain state of mind

E  Mind controls men’s facial expressions more obvious than women’s.

Paragraph E. As Charles Darwin noted in his book The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals: the young and the old of widely different races, both with man and animals, express the same state of mind by the same movements. Studies conducted in the 1960s by Paul Ekman eventually supported Darwin’s belief to a large degree.

Paragraph H. This may suggest that facial expressions are largely related to the mind and each part on the face can express specific emotion.

    Note:

Skim through passages to find that paragraph E, F and H mention Ekman’s theory.

In paragraph E, Darwin proposed that people express the same state of mind by the same movements, meaning there is a relationship between the two things. Ekman later supported that belief.

In paragraph H, it is stated that each part on the face (or different areas on face) can express (or convey) specific (or certain) emotion (or state of mind).

    Answer: B, D

READING PASSAGE 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 1 -13, which are based on Reading Passage 1 below.

Facial Expression 1

A

A facial expression is one or more motions or positions of the muscles in the skin. These movements convey the emotional state of the individual to observers. Facial expressions are a form of nonverbal communication. They are a primary means of conveying social information among aliens, but also occur in most other mammals and some other animal species. Facial expressions and their significance in the perceiver can, to some extent, vary between cultures with evidence from descriptions in the works of Charles Darwin.

B

Humans can adopt a facial expression to read as a voluntary action. However, because expressions are closely tied to emotion, they are more often involuntary. It can be nearly impossible to avoid expressions for certain emotions, even when it would be strongly desirable to do so; a person who is trying to avoid insulting an individual he or she finds highly unattractive might, nevertheless, show a brief expression of disgust before being able to reassume a neutral expression. Microexpressions are one example of this phenomenon. The close link between emotion and expression can also work in the order direction; it has been observed that voluntarily assuming an expression can actually cause the associated emotion.

C

Some expressions can be accurately interpreted even between members of different species – anger and extreme contentment being the primary examples. Others, however, are difficult to interpret even in familiar individuals. For instance, disgust and fear can be tough to tell apart. Because faces have only a limited range of movement, expressions rely upon fairly minuscule differences in the proportion and relative position of facial features, and reading them requires considerable sensitivity to the same. Some faces are often falsely read as expressing some emotion, even when they are neutral because their proportions naturally resemble those another face would temporarily assume when emoting.

D

Also, a person’s eyes reveal much about hos they are feeling, or what they are thinking. Blink rate can reveal how nervous or at ease a person maybe. Research by Boston College professor Joe Tecce suggests that stress levels are revealed by blink rates. He supports his data with statistics on the relation between the blink rates of presidential candidates and their success in their races. Tecce claims that the faster blinker in the presidential debates has lost every election since 1980. Though Tecce’s data is interesting, it is important to recognize that non-verbal communication is multi-channelled, and focusing on only one aspect is reckless. Nervousness can also be measured by examining each candidates’ perspiration, eye contact and stiffness.

E

As Charles Darwin noted in his book The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals: the young and the old of widely different races, both with man and animals, express the same state of mind by the same movements. Still, up to the mid-20th century, most anthropologists believed that facial expressions were entirely learned and could, therefore, differ among cultures. Studies conducted in the 1960s by Paul Ekman eventually supported Darwin’s belief to a large degree.

F

Ekman’s work on facial expressions had its starting point in the work of psychologist Silvan Tomkins. Ekman showed that contrary to the belief of some anthropologists including Margaret Mead, facial expressions of emotion are not culturally determined, but universal across human cultures. The South Fore people of New Guinea were chosen as subjects for one such survey. The study consisted of 189 adults and 130 children from among a very isolated population, as well as twenty-three members of the culture who lived a less isolated lifestyle as a control group. Participants were told a story that described one particular emotion; they were then shown three pictures (two for children) of facial expressions and asked to match the picture which expressed the story’s emotion.

G

While the isolated South Fore people could identify emotions with the same accuracy as the non-isolated control group, problems associated with the study include the fact that both fear and surprise were constantly misidentified. The study concluded that certain facial expressions correspond to particular emotions and can not be covered, regardless of cultural background, and regardless of whether or not the culture has been isolated or exposed to the mainstream.

H

Expressions Ekman found to be universally included those indicating anger, disgust, fear, joy, sadness, and surprise (not that none of these emotions has a definitive social component, such as shame, pride, or schadenfreude). Findings on contempt (which is social) are less clear, though there is at least some preliminary evidence that this emotion and its expression are universally recognized. This may suggest that the facial expressions are largely related to the mind and each part on the face can express specific emotion.

the line grap compares three companies A, B and C in terms of the amount of waste output from 2000 to 2015.

overall, there was an increase in the amount of watse production in company C over the given period, while the opposite was true for companies A and B. In addition, the amount of waste produced by company A was consistently the highest until 2013

In 2000, company A produced a massive 12 tonnes of waste, compared to around 8 tonnes of waste for company B, and 4 tonnes of waste for company C. Over the following 5 years, company A saw a small fall in waste output, to 11 tonnes in 2005, whereas a rise in waste production was seen in the figures for companies B and C, an increase of 2 tonnes each.

thereafter, the amount of waste produced by company A keep falling, reaching 8 tonnes in 2015. A similar trend was also witnessed in the figure for company B, falling sharply from its peak of 10 tonnes in 2005 to only 3 tonnes in 2015. The figure for company C, on the other hand, continued to rise to peak at 10 tonnes in 2015

The Above Graph Illustrates the comparison of three companies junk processed in tones by them in 15 years duration.
The Company A which started with highest waste produced in its initial stage, later on the graph indicates the Company A is managed to reduces its junk perfectly. The company B is well structured company, because the junk produced in its first stage is moderate , while after some years the junk got reduced to minimum with good impression. Company C is started with less junk produced by it. Afterwards the junk processed by them is too high.. so there might any change needed in managing the junk produced by it.
Company A is started with 12 tones of junk in its starting career, after the graph indicates that's there a good progress in it by having 8.5 tones less junk produced after some years. compared to Company A, Company B is well organized because the initial stage of it also have some junk processed about 8.5 tones, which is the final result of Company A. Here in Company B , after years it went to just 2.9 tones which recorded lowest by all other companies. Company C is different to Company A and Company B, because it started with 3.2 tones of junk to 9.5 tones which is the huge affecting factor to the company C.
So, In my opinion Company C should implement some immediate changes in its junk management or else, it might result in huge junk production.

Over the last two decades, there has been a dramatic change in climate all over the world. Some people believe that living with this change is comfortable than to avoid. However, I completely Disagree with the statement. Few arguments on agreement and a counter argument with a conclusion along with an example is discussed below.
Firstly, Global warming, Greenhouse effect and the Ozone layer depletion are the major issues caused due to increase in the harmful gases through human activities.

One among such activities which causes serious damage to environment is greenhouse gases from vehicles. People around globe are more addicted for using their personal vehicles rather than public transport, which produces more emissions increasing carbon dioxide percentage in atmosphere thus causing Greenhouse effect.
Another such activity is using of freon gases has significantly increased in recent years. These gases are used in air conditioning units, shipping containers and all type of cold storage units. According to the recent study using of freon has almost tripled over last 5 years, which causes severe damage to Ozone layer and leads to Global warming.

Solution to these problems is, people should avoid using personal vehicles and use public transport instead which will reduce half of the emissions. Another suggestion is to create a ban on using CFC gases as freon, they should be replaced with environmentally friendly gases, in that way damage to ozone can be restricted.
On the other hand, people these days are so dependent and comfortable with their vehicles and cannot live without A/c or refrigerators in their homes. They should be educated about the consequences of using such things.

However, it is every individual's responsibility to save our environment. Government along with media should encourage public to grow more trees and reduce pollution by using public transport.

In 2005 companyB reached its peak value of 10 tonnes and then their prodution dropped down significantly and recorded as the least producer in 2015.
From 2010 to 2015 trends started to change,Company C rocketed their poduction of waste,Company A and B controlled their waste production and declined their trend to second and third place respectively.

In today's world, for the great majority of people, it has been long held that instead of preventing climate change, we could find a path to live with it. This essay will reveal a number of ways of living with climate change and it is going to draw an agreement to this topic with a several examples and details based on society's overview.
Looking from a general perspective, it is undeniable that the rapid growth of the climate changes had started to split its threat on people's lives, whereas humanity tries to set certain sorts of obstacles to avoid from this issue such as rising the price of gasoline which had been resulted as complaints among the earth population. Moreover, the numerous studies have consistently found that average temperature of the several places has risen due to the fact of the climate change and ice  has been melted in Antarctica, whereas the ocean sea levels also influenced.
However, a vast seniority of communities have narrated that it is a top-notch to get accustomed to this climate event while according to the UK society, informing the people is a effective way to find a solution to live with this problem. Additionally, unions could generate their energy supply from the sun which can be least detrimentally to the earth. Furthermore, UK government have revealed that Georgia is the least affected country from a climate change while this is despite the fact of the energy panels which gets the electric from the sun.
To draw the conclusion, I would like to state my agreement to this this statement, because we can not stop the climate change by doing several actions but we could be an aid for its stabilization while for this purpose, countries should use the sun panels more frequently.

The chart explained the quantity of junk generated by three enterprises accumulated for 15 years from 2000 to 2015.
Overall, each company had different fluctuate, but the two companies could reduce the volume of waste. The other one had a relatively small number at first but kept increasing over the years.
In 2000, company A had the most waste at 12 tonnes, while company B held the second position with 8 tonnes. At first, the volume of trash in company B increased slightly in 2005 to 10 tonnes, yet they managed to shrink the volume to 3 tonnes in 2015, becoming the lowest contributor. Meanwhile, company A also succeeded decreased the junk by reducing the quantity slightly to 8 tonnes in 2015.
In contrast, company C had the lowest quantity of waste at first with 3 tonnes in 2000. However, the amount continued growing for years. As a result, in 2015, Company C produced 10 tonnes of waste and became the most contributor.
