You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 1-13 , which are based on Reading Passage 1 below.
A In the late 1990s, psychologist Martin Seligman of the University of Pennsylvania urged colleagues to observe optimal moods with the same intensity with which they had for so long studied pathologies: we would never learn about the full range of human functions unless we knew as much about mental wellness as we do about mental illness. A new generation of psychologists built up a respectable body of research on positive character traits and happiness-boosting practices. At the same time, developments in neuroscience provided new clues to what makes us happy and what that looks like in the brain. Self-appointed experts took advantage of the trend with guarantees to eliminate worry, stress, dejection and even boredom. This happiness movement has provoked a great deal of opposition among psychologists who observe that the preoccupation with happiness has come at the cost of sadness, an important feeling that people have tried to banish from their emotional repertoire. Allan Horwitz of Rutgers laments that young people who are naturally weepy after breakups are often urged to medicate themselves instead of working through their sadness. Wake Forest University’s Eric Wilson fumes that the obsession with happiness amounts to a “craven disregard” for the melancholic perspective that has given rise to the greatest works of art. “The happy man” he writes, “is a hollow man.”
B After all people are remarkably adaptable. Following a variable period of adjustment, we bounce back to our previous level of happiness, no matter what happens to us. (There are some scientifically proven exceptions, notably suffering the unexpected loss of a job or the loss of a spouse. Both events tend to permanently knock people back a step.) Our adaptability works in two directions. Because we are so adaptable, points out Professor Sonja Lyubomirsky of the University of California, we quickly get used to many of the accomplishments we strive for in life, such as landing the big job or getting married. Soon after we reach a milestone, we start to feel that something is missing. We begin coveting another worldly possession or eyeing a social advancement. But such an approach keeps us tethered to a treadmill where happiness is always just out of reach, one toy or one step away. It’s possible to get off the treadmill entirely by focusing on activities that are dynamic surprising, and attention- absorbing, and thus less likely to bore us than, say, acquiring shiny new toys.
C Moreover, happiness is not a reward for escaping pain. Russ Harris, the author of The Happiness Trap, calls popular conceptions of happiness dangerous because they set people up for a “struggle against reality”. They don’t acknowledge that real life is full of disappointments, loss, and inconveniences. “If you’re going to live a rich and meaningful life,” Harris says, “you’re going to feel a full range of emotions.” Action toward goals other than happiness makes people happy. It is not crossing the finish line that is most rewarding, it is anticipating achieving the goal. University of Wisconsin neuroscientist Richard Davidson has found that working hard toward a goal, and making progress to the point of expecting a goal to be realized, not only activates positive feelings but also suppresses negative emotions such as fear and depression.
D We are constantly making decisions, ranging from what clothes to put on, to whom we should marry, not to mention all those flavors of ice cream. We base many of our decisions on whether we think a particular preference will increase our well-being. Intuitively, we seem convinced that the more choices we have, the better off we will ultimately be. But our world of unlimited opportunity imprisons us more than it makes us happy. In what Swarthmore psychologist Barry Schwartz calls “the paradox of choice,” facing many possibilities leaves us stressed out – and less satisfied with whatever we do decide. Having too many choices keeps us wondering about all the opportunities missed.
E Besides, not everyone can put on a happy face. Barbara Held, a professor of psychology at Bowdoin College, rails against “the tyranny of the positive attitude”. “Looking on the bright side isn’t possible for some people and is even counterproductive” she insists. “When you put pressure on people to cope in a way that doesn’t fit them, it not only doesn’t work, it makes them feel like a failure on top of already feeling bad.” The one-size-fits-all approach to managing emotional life is misguided, agrees Professor Julie Norem, author of The Positive Power of Negative Thinking. In her research, she has shown that the defensive pessimism that anxious people feel can be harnessed to help them get things done, which in turn makes them happier. A naturally pessimistic architect, for example, can set low expectations for an upcoming presentation and review all of the bad outcomes that she’s imagining, so that she can prepare carefully and increase her chances of success.
F By contrast, an individual who is not living according to their values, will not be happy, no matter how much they achieve. Some people, however, are not sure what their values are. In that case Harris has a great question: “Imagine I could wave a magic wand to ensure that you would have the approval and admiration of everyone on the planet, forever. What, in that case, would you choose to do with your life?” Once this has been answered honestly, you can start taking steps toward your ideal vision of yourself. The actual answer is unimportant, as long as you’re living consciously. The state of happiness is not really a state at all. It’s an ongoing personal experiment.

The Above Graph Illustrates the comparison of three companies junk processed in tones by them in 15 years duration.
The Company A which started with highest waste produced in its initial stage, later on the graph indicates the Company A is managed to reduces its junk perfectly. The company B is well structured company, because the junk produced in its first stage is moderate , while after some years the junk got reduced to minimum with good impression. Company C is started with less junk produced by it. Afterwards the junk processed by them is too high.. so there might any change needed in managing the junk produced by it.
Company A is started with 12 tones of junk in its starting career, after the graph indicates that's there a good progress in it by having 8.5 tones less junk produced after some years. compared to Company A, Company B is well organized because the initial stage of it also have some junk processed about 8.5 tones, which is the final result of Company A. Here in Company B , after years it went to just 2.9 tones which recorded lowest by all other companies. Company C is different to Company A and Company B, because it started with 3.2 tones of junk to 9.5 tones which is the huge affecting factor to the company C.
So, In my opinion Company C should implement some immediate changes in its junk management or else, it might result in huge junk production.

Over the last two decades, there has been a dramatic change in climate all over the world. Some people believe that living with this change is comfortable than to avoid. However, I completely Disagree with the statement. Few arguments on agreement and a counter argument with a conclusion along with an example is discussed below.
Firstly, Global warming, Greenhouse effect and the Ozone layer depletion are the major issues caused due to increase in the harmful gases through human activities.
One among such activities which causes serious damage to environment is greenhouse gases from vehicles. People around globe are more addicted for using their personal vehicles rather than public transport, which produces more emissions increasing carbon dioxide percentage in atmosphere thus causing Greenhouse effect.
Another such activity is using of freon gases has significantly increased in recent years. These gases are used in air conditioning units, shipping containers and all type of cold storage units. According to the recent study using of freon has almost tripled over last 5 years, which causes severe damage to Ozone layer and leads to Global warming.
Solution to these problems is, people should avoid using personal vehicles and use public transport instead which will reduce half of the emissions. Another suggestion is to create a ban on using CFC gases as freon, they should be replaced with environmentally friendly gases, in that way damage to ozone can be restricted.
On the other hand, people these days are so dependent and comfortable with their vehicles and cannot live without A/c or refrigerators in their homes. They should be educated about the consequences of using such things.
However, it is every individual's responsibility to save our environment. Government along with media should encourage public to grow more trees and reduce pollution by using public transport.
The line graph gives the information about the quantity of garbage produced by comapnies A,B and C over a 15-year period from 2000 to 2015.
overall, the amount of waste generated by companyC increased steadily and reached its peak in 2015,whereas company A although it was the major waste produced firm among the three, these figures droped steadily through out the period.
Getting into deatails, initially in 2000, company A produced huge waste of about 12 tonnes and recorded as the highest garbage production firm,by contrast Company C generated only one quarter of its figure.
In 2005 companyB reached its peak value of 10 tonnes and then their prodution dropped down significantly and recorded as the least producer in 2015.
From 2010 to 2015 trends started to change,Company C rocketed their poduction of waste,Company A and B controlled their waste production and declined their trend to second and third place respectively.
The line graph illustrates the tonnes of waste made by 3 companies between years 2000- 2015.
Overall, the company C has the highest point in producing wastes as it also have a continous upward trend in the previous period, while Company B has the sudden drop of waste production in 15 years.
Company A's production of waste has its peak in year 2000 at 12 tonnes and had a continious decline in 2005 and 2010, with around 11 and 9 tonnes, respectively. It reach its lowest point in 2015 by approximately 8 tonnes.
Meanwhile, Company B, has a fluctuations in 2005 where it escalated to more than 9 tonnes from around 8 tonnes in 2000. It went down by 2010 by about 7 tonnes and fall to maximun level at 3 tonnes in year 2015.
Lastly, Company C, shows a continious elevation in producing waste as in year 2000 by about 4 tonnes, slightly increase to 6 tonnes in 2005, another constant rise in 2010 by around 7 tonnes and maximum growth of production happened by year 2015 by 10 tonnes.

In today's world, for the great majority of people, it has been long held that instead of preventing climate change, we could find a path to live with it. This essay will reveal a number of ways of living with climate change and it is going to draw an agreement to this topic with a several examples and details based on society's overview.
Looking from a general perspective, it is undeniable that the rapid growth of the climate changes had started to split its threat on people's lives, whereas humanity tries to set certain sorts of obstacles to avoid from this issue such as rising the price of gasoline which had been resulted as complaints among the earth population. Moreover, the numerous studies have consistently found that average temperature of the several places has risen due to the fact of the climate change and ice has been melted in Antarctica, whereas the ocean sea levels also influenced.
However, a vast seniority of communities have narrated that it is a top-notch to get accustomed to this climate event while according to the UK society, informing the people is a effective way to find a solution to live with this problem. Additionally, unions could generate their energy supply from the sun which can be least detrimentally to the earth. Furthermore, UK government have revealed that Georgia is the least affected country from a climate change while this is despite the fact of the energy panels which gets the electric from the sun.
To draw the conclusion, I would like to state my agreement to this this statement, because we can not stop the climate change by doing several actions but we could be an aid for its stabilization while for this purpose, countries should use the sun panels more frequently.
The chart explained the quantity of junk generated by three enterprises accumulated for 15 years from 2000 to 2015.
Overall, each company had different fluctuate, but the two companies could reduce the volume of waste. The other one had a relatively small number at first but kept increasing over the years.
In 2000, company A had the most waste at 12 tonnes, while company B held the second position with 8 tonnes. At first, the volume of trash in company B increased slightly in 2005 to 10 tonnes, yet they managed to shrink the volume to 3 tonnes in 2015, becoming the lowest contributor.
