It can be noticed by many that news platforms tend more so to propagate stories that are of a negative nature than of those that are positive. I certainly feel that this is the case for most of the news outlets.
The main stories shown via forms of media meant as a source of news are mostly negative such as stories of crimes, be they local or international. Reports of wars or natural disasters seem to spread like wild fire due to these news reports. Of course, it is important that the public is informed about certain current events, but the unbalanced nature of the positivity of the news can be harmful to the very people it is meant to serve.
With the wide reach of the internet and most of the world owning smartphones we are easily bombarded with depressing news. Our day-to-day lives are now consumed by social media, much of which is negative. This is most likely due to the fact that bad news catches the average persons eye when scrolling through a news feed. People are more likely to engage with a disaster or a scandal than they are to with a happy uplifting story.
I believe this is harmful as it skews the outlook people have on the world. When people are constantly shown negative or fear-inducing stories this can lead to poor mental health. The rates of depression and anxiety will undoubtedly increase as a consequence. This impacts everyone as the news is far-reaching and potent in its ability to influence and effects a person or a nation's overall mood.
To conclude I do indeed believe that the negative bias portayed by news reports can lead to deleterious mental health effects for the millions of people that consume that content on a daily basis. Hence, changes must be made to provide more of a balance in the news that is reported.
