Task 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The diagrams below show how houses can be protected in areas which are prone to flooding.

Write a report for a university, lecturer describing the information shown below.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

You should write at least 150 words.

Writing task 1

The given diagrams compare two ways of preventing the building from dangerous flood.

Overall, it can be seen that the building are protected by the stopbank. On the other hand, without it, the building will be demolished if people don’t raise the building above ground level.

In the first diagram, it is useful for the building to have a stopbank nearby. The stopbank is a mound of land which is higher than the 100-year flood level, and it plays an important role in defending the house against the flood. Furthermore, the nearby building can be built on stilts in order to allow the water from the rainwater flow into drain through the floodgate.

In contrast, as you can see, without the stopbank, there will be nothing can stop the water from flooding. In this situation, the best solution is to build the building on the stilts that are higher 300mm than the 100-year flood level. This measurement is called “freeboard”.

Task 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic.

Some people think that we should divide students based on their academic ability, while others think we should educate all students together. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

In this time and age, numerous people think that students ought to be divided based on their scholastic abilities. On the other hand, others think all students should be taught together, include the intelligent and ignorant. In my perspective, I support the first idea because of the students’ abilities.

To begin with, there are various factors show that the students ought to be taught in the mixed abilitiy classes. To be more specific, students can support each other to improve their weak abilities. For example, one student is weak in math but good at English and help another one who is good at math but learning English well. Furthermore, teaching together help the students make some friendships. Why? As you can guess, a student with high academic ability will not make friends with somebody who have a low skill. Thus, he will be alone, no friends, no social relationships. If they faced up to the big problem, he wouldn’t ask to do for a favor.

On the other hand, there are many reasons why the school should educate students based on their academic abilities. First of all, the students that learn better than the other ought to be taught by the best teacher and also the best lesson plan so that they can enhance their learning skills. For example, the students with high academic abilities can learn how to solve the difficult exercise math even though the weaker need a lot of time or they have to require the explanation from the teacher. Moreover, learning the unsuitable curicullum makes them boring in that subject. Therefore, they spend their time doing their jobs. As a result, the good students will find that learning is not interesting.

To sum up, there are many pros and cons of educating together or diving based on students’ abilities. In my opinion, the students should be divided based on their skills so as to strengthen and improve their academic skills.
