Task 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The diagrams below show how houses can be protected in areas which are prone to flooding.

Write a report for a university, lecturer describing the information shown below.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

You should write at least 150 words.

Writing task 1

On the diagrams shown above two options of house´s protection against flood; with and without stopbank are shown. It is worthy to say it applies to buildings located near a river and that are prone to flooding.

The first one consist on buildind a stopbank near river bank and raise the building. A stopbank is a bank made of eart that should have a floodgate, a berm, a freeboard and a stopbank. Meanwhile, the second one consist on just raising the building.

Constructing a stopbank should be used when internal runoff and internal ponding exist on the area. On the other hand, the second option should be used when the building is close to the river bank. It is important to mention that in both cases; construct stopbank and/or raise the building, it will be very safe given the freeboard of 300 mm from water to house floor level with a flood of 100 years.

Task 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic.

Some people think that we should divide students based on their academic ability, while others think we should educate all students together. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

Group students based on their academic skills?, that is the question. Usually in classrooms all around the word we can find a varied group of students. Those students have different abilities and different learning time. So here comes the question if it is better that students can see the diffent skills of their classmates or if they should be classified by their abilies.

On one hand some parents, teachers and say they should classify students based on their learning abilities. It may help to all the groups given to have a better and more personal education based on what they are capable of. On the other hand people may see this like discrimation to students that don´t have skills considered normal or admirable by the society. Additionally, it may occur a disgregation of a group, where all individuals can not see beyond their reality.

In my opinion, students at the beginig of the year should take a test and be divided by their talents. I think this will help to improve students learning process and avoid lost of time. An example of this situation happened to me when I was at high school. Even though I alredy knew english and my teacher knew that, she kept on teaching me basic english rules. This could be avoid by having a special class for people who alredy knew english, where we could improve our abilities.

In conclusion, diving students based on their academic ability have more advantages than disadvantages. Some of them are improving students learning process, having a personal education and skills development.
