Writing Task 1

In the image, we are provided with a plethora of information. We can see that in Australia and Korea the starting salary is substantially lower than in European countries like Denmark and Luxembourg. Over the years though, the salary of secondary/high school teachers is increased. After analyzing the information provided in the table, we can conclude that in Luxembourg, Japan and Korea it takes more than three decades to start to earn the maximum salary whereas in Australia and Denmark, this yearly salary can be achieved in less than ten years.

Task 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

The tendency of news reports in the media to focus more on problems and emergencies rather than on positive developments is harmful to the individuals and the society as a whole.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

You should write at least 250 words.

It is no secret that as humans, we often become ignorant of our privileges and tend to focus and pay more attention to the pejorative aspects of our lives. Most of this information is fed to us through the media that we consume daily. And this can heavily affect our moods and the way we interact with the people around us. It is for this reason that I agree with the statement to a certain extent.

If news reports were to shift their focus and started broadcasting and putting out more positive information, people's moods would be greatly improved. If someone is on their way to work and are in a traffic jam listening to the radio, the situation they are currently in is already frustrating enough, hearing a news report on a catastrophic event taking place somewhere in the world would most likely decrease their mood and leave them feeling more frustrated. Whereas if the person in the traffic jam were to be listening to any sort of positive development, their mood could potentially get better.

Although positive developments should be reported on more, there is a reality to the problems and emergencies in the world. If we only chose to take in positive media, then we would be blinding ourselves to the issues that currently ravage our world and societies such as climate change, increased poverty, conflicts and wars. It is because of the people that see and consume news reports on current issues that these issues get resolved.

In conclusion, I believe that there should be an equal mix of the type of media that is reported on the news, broadcasting the problems and emergencies that are currently happening in the world opens our eyes and invites us to solve these issues. But we most not only focus on these reports but rather incorporate more stories on positive developments to show how change is possible.
