The prioritizing of negative news over positive ones by news outlets, is believed to be detrimental to people and society at large. It is my opinion that this is a valid proposition.
Negative developments and occurrences do not necessarily need the help of media houses in reaching public knowledge as it is often righly said that bad news travels fast. These kind of news leave people feeling sad and depressed, as opposed to positive occurrences requiring longer time to be disseminated but are elating in nature.
When the twin towers collapsed, the news was disseminated round the world in the span of less than an hour without the help of the media, however the news of roads being constructed or homes being built will only be news within the locality they are being developed.
The resultant effect of negative news is detrimental to health and productivity. Health wise, there is depression, anxiety and even anger that can cause violence to erupt in retaliation. Positive developments however, creates a sense of espirit de coups among people who will be led to believe that the society works and their efforts are fruitful. It rejuvenates hope that can easily be destroyed by negative ones. In terms of productivity, a happy person puts in more effort at work than one who has been depressed by a sad news.
It is thus important that media houses focus more on news that brings hope and lightens the heart of the people since the issues and emergencies in society has much more efficient means of dissemination.
