Boxing is a sport which always causes physical harm to the participants, a blood sport like boxing can be seen as inappropriate in our modern society; therefore, is that point of view valid? Personally, I wholeheartedly disagree that boxing is obsolete in present times.
Although boxing is brutal and the premise of it is to inflict physical impacts on another person, it is all done in a professional, mannered way and it is competitive just like any other sport, take sumo wrestling for example, it is traditional and viewed as a respectful sport. Furthermore, boxing is a way of demonstrating the physique and strength of the practioners, as well as other skills sets and talents, such as reflex, combat intelligence, etc... On top of that, measures have been taken to ensure that no risk of fatality is presented during a boxing match. However, the injuries themselves will still happen but no to the extreme of making people become an invalid.
On the other hand, the sporters are paid sufficient for their participation and endurance. For example, a professional boxer can get a payout of up to 10 thousand dollars or more per fight. Taking account for their injuries, some of which might need surgical care after their fights, the reward money can adequately cover the medical bills might not leaving much for them in the aftermath. Thefore, people whose goal is money via participating in this sport might be upset when they suffer serious wounds, because rather than a big payout they would get intensive care and hospitalized.
Overall, boxing is a sport that is some that is not unfitting for our modern age and time. The blood sport itself can be viewed as any other competitive sport and it is loved by many people, as the fans see it as another means of display personal talent to the masses.
