The table below shows social and economic indicators for four countries in 1994, according to United Nations statistics.

Describe the information shown below in your own words. What implications do the indicators have for the countries?

Writing task 1

The statistics obtained from the United Nations about social and economic indicators of four different nations - Canada, Japan, Peru and Zaire, in the year 1994 is represented here in a tabular form.

There are four types of indicators presented in the table. Annual income per person is the only economic indicator and people of Japan earn in high numbers when compared to the other countries. Whereas, social indicator category consists of three indicators and it is quite distributed among the nations.

On taking up 'Annual income per person (in USD)', an economic indicator, Japanese people earn more per capita income than any other country residents with USD 15,760. While Canada is in second highest position with USD 11,100, the other countries are far behind, just having a three digit per capita income.

Moving on to the social indicators, Japan, again, has the highest life expectancy at birth depicting a 78 and Canada just a little behind with 76. Canada stands at the top with the most daily calorie supply per person indicator, 3326. Coming to the adult literacy rate, Canada and Japan share the same percentage of 99 while Peru has 68% and the least is Zaire with 34%.
