Writing Task 1

The line chart illustrates percentages of elders, aged 65 and over, in three nations between 1940 and today, and projections are also given until 2040. Overall, the proportion of elders in each country increased throughout the period and the same trend is forecasted in the future.

Looking to Japan, 5% of the population was aged over 65 in 1940 and it decreased slighlty to reach approximately 3% in 1960. This percentage remained stable for over 10 years, and during the eighties, it rose steadily to attain nearly 10% in 2021. A drastic rise is projected in the future, and elders will represent more than 25% of the population in 2040. Surprisingly, Japan had the lowest rate of elders at the beginning of the period, and the highest rate is forecasted in 2040.

Moving to Sweden, about 7% of the population was aged over 65 in 1940. It went up constantly until 1980 when it reached nearly 15%. The percentages fluctuated until 2021. After that, a dramatic increase is predicted, and the rate will reach 25% in 2040.

Turning to the United States, they had the highest rate of elders in 1940 at almost 10%. It increased to attain 15% in 1980 and then decreased slightly until 2020. Again, an impressive augmentation is forecasted in 2040 at about 22%.

Task 2

Some people think that the most important thing about being rich is it gives a person the opportunity to help other people.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

Money has always driven the world, but only a few people have the privilege of being rich. Some individuals believe that this privilege essentially gives you the opportunity to help other people. Personally, I disagree with that statement because I think wealthy people must invest in their education and well-being before being able to help others.

Education is crucial for every individual and one has to be well educated about the problems in our society before trying to spend their money on various organisations. If one is not aware of major issues that impact dreadfully their community, it is consequently very difficult to invest founds where it really counts. For example, Bill Gates did a lot of studies and he is now investing intelligently to help the society.

Moreover, I believe that one must spend money on their own comfort before others. It would be odd to give money away if you did not respond to your own needs first. I am not insinuating that rich people have to live in a castle, but having a comfortable home and some possessions are reasonable. In fact, one is more able to support others in their struggles when they are themselves in a state of well-being.

In conclusion, helping less fortunate people is capital and I believe that the wealthier should share their fortunes with others. However, I strongly think that the best way to help others is by helping yourself first. Once a higher level of education is reached and rich people are comfortable in their lifestyle, they are then more able to take care of other citizens.
