Writing task 1

The graphs given are a pictorial representation of information on the participants of some evening courses at an education centre in 2009. The bar chart gives the information on the numbers of the sexes involved in the different courses namely Drama, Painting, Sculpture and Language. The pie chart illustrates the percentages of the various age groups of the participants.

Overall, there were more women enrolled in all the courses except in Sculpture. Also, most of the participants were 50 years or older whereas the least numbers recorded were aged under 20.

To start with, Language had the highest number of participants with over 40 females pursuing it. This was significantly higher than the number of their male counterparts which was 20. Painting followed with 30 females and well above 20 males included in the course. 20 females and 10 males pursued Drama. The lowest numbers recorded were in Sculpture which had only 10 males and well under 10 females pursuing the course.

According to the pie chart, 42% of the participants of the evening courses at the adult education centre were 50 years and older. This was the highest number recorded. Following them were those aged between 40 to 49 with 26%. Participants between 30-39 years and 20-29 years followed closely with 16% and 11%, respectively. Finally, only 5% of people under 20 years attended the evening classes.

Write about the following topic.

The issue of gay marriage remains controversial. Some people think that this trend has adverse effects on the society while others believe that it is seen as a natural trend and right for people to choose this type of marriage. Should gay marriage be legal?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

Homosexuality has been an issue of contention for ages and many believe, on the one hand, that it has adverse effects on the society and should therefore not be legalised. On the other hand, others are more accepting of it and believe in its legitimacy as a natural phenomenon. In my opinion, gay marriage should be legalised because it does society no harm, as feared, and its illegality only breeds discrimination against homosexuals. This essay will discuss these points.

First and foremost, those who deem homosexual marriages harmful to society say it defeats the purpose of marriage for procreation but this could not be further from the truth. Indeed, naturally, humans were made in two different sexes to aid in procreation, but not every marriage has led to child bearing, either by choice or otherwise. It is therefore pretentious to state gay marriages as the only reason why populations will decline. In addition, there are many ways gay parents can parent a child and these include adoption and surrogacy. Thus, gay marriages do not harm society in any way, as it is a decision of 2 consenting adults with its consequences affecting no one else.

Moreover, making homosexuality illegal only heightens discrimination and violence against them. Humans in minority groups have always found a way to survive and thrive, whether or not their actions or existence were deemed legal. Making homosexuality illegal will not stop people from being homosexual. However, it will only worsen their living situation with the added disadvantage of discrimination and violence against them. This was the case of Alan Turing, the father of computers. After his sexual orientation was discovered, he was put under the harshest of conditions which affected his living situation. These were all in an attempt to stop him from being gay, which he could not do up till the time of his suicide. Maintaining homosexuality as illegal has, and will produce the same stories in millions in future. The best way out is to legalise it.

To conclude, while some believe that homosexuality is a bane to society, others believe that is only natural and should not be discouraged. In this essay, I have explained that gay marriage should be legalised because it does little to harm society and keeping it illegal only causes greater discrimination and violence against homosexual people.
