Writing task 1

The given line graphs depict the enrolments of overseas students versus local students in Australian universities over a ten year period starting from 2001 to 2010.

The total number of overseas students escalated gradually over the years, starting from 20000 students in 2001 to reaching a total of just above 80000 in 2010. Meanwhile, the total number of local students increased considerably from 400000 students in 2001 to stopping at 600000 students in 2007. From here on until 2010, the number of total local students remained the same.

However, there is a significant change in the number of overseas and local students commencing their studies. The figures for the overseas students again increased significantly in contrast to the number of local students which fluctuated just between 180000 and 225000 over the ten year period. The number of freshmen who came from overseas saw an increase until 2009 going from around 15000 in 2001 to 40000 in 2009 which remained about the same in 2010 as well.

It is a debated issue whether hosting an international sports event has positive impact on the country or not. It is believed by some to be for the good of the country while the opinion of others differ. This essay will discuss both sides of the argument in detail and provide reasons as to why it is a good thing for the country.

Hosting an international sports event has significant positive impacts on the country. For instance, the high number of tourists visiting to watch the event helps the tourism sector of the country. This also gives a good oppurtunity for the smaller and less known businesses to improve due to such international events, which overall, helps to boost the economy of the country.

Nevertheless, hosting such an event at international level comes with its own drawbacks. For example, the country has to be ready to invest a huge sum of money for the preparations of the event. Also, since it is a sports event, the safety of the athletes is of utmost importance. So if any kind of accidents occur during the games, the country is prone to face multiple backlashes which could prove troublesome for the country. These are the reasons why some people hold the view of not facilitating games in the nation.

Taking everything into consideration, although, there are disadvantages to hosting an international sports event, I believe the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. And so for this very reason, a country should not think twice before accepting to host such an event.
