Writing task 1

The diagrams given above are a schematic representation of the current floor plan of a building and a proposal for its renovation.

Overall, in the suggested plan, the living room is to be expanded, and there are some changes in the kitchen and central area, that is, the hall and stairs.

In the existing plan, there is an entrance located in the centre from the south, which leads to the stairs (with a storage underneath) and hall, both of which are bounded by internal walls on both sides and internal doors to the north side. To the right of the hall and stairs is the living room and to their left is the kitchen. But in the new plan, the position of the entrance is maintained, however, the northern doors are now located on the left of the entrance and the living room and stairs have been expanded, at the expense of the right internal wall, the storage below the stairs and the hall. Finally, on the side of the kitchen, to the right, there is a proposed kitchen floor which assumes a 'U' shape.

There is an ongoing debate with regards to the best mode of education for children, while on the one hand, a school of thought believes it is best to home school children as it aids their development, on the other hand some people believe formal education is best. Both views come with their own benefits, for the former, it does aid development by strengthening their basic education and for the latter, it is necessary to teach them social skills. In my opinion, both methods are equally useful and can be employed. Children can be taught at home upto a certain age, and then enrolled into schools. This essay will explain these points.

To begin with, many parents do not embrace the idea of formal education because the mere thought of their children being with a number of strangers for a significant propotion of the day frightens them. Their grieviances are very understandable, however, formal education is necessary for the wholistic development of children. This is because it teaches them how to interact with other people and they begin to learn other perspectives of life. This in turn helps to form their personality and character. Furthermore, It helps them to develop social skills such as making friends and carrying conversations; skills which are very useful later in life. Therefore, receving formal education can be considered a necessary aspect in raising a child.

On the other hand, the benfits offered by formal education do not invalidate informal education, also known as home schooling. Like formal education, home schooling also has some advantages, one important one being that it helps in the development of children. This is achieved by its ability to strengthen their basic education. Because the child is being taught alone or with a few other children, the teacher has a better relationship with the child and he/she is able to adjust their teaching style to suit the child's learning method. Moreover, it is easy for the child to ask questions without fear of being jested. With this, they are able to understand the fundamental aspects of basic education which are necessary for further education.

With the above points, it is clear that both modes of education are benefitial in their own ways and this is why, in my opinion, I believe both methods can be adopted. To achieve this, children can be home schooled during their early years up to a period of about 6 years and then subsequently, they can be enrolled into schools. With this, they would have mastered the basic aspects of language and counting at home, with ease, before starting primary education, where they can now build on their social skills.

In conclusion, there is a controversy concerning the best method of education for children. While some people think that formal education is best, others beg to differ. This essay has highlighted the advantages of both views, by detailing on how formal education helps with social skills while informal education helps to consolidate a child's basic education. In my opinion, both views are qually important and should therefore be employed in certain stages of development.
