Some people believe that giving longer prison sentences is the best way to reduce crime. Others believe that there are better ways to reduce crime. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
You should write at least 250 words.
Crime punishments have evolved in recent decades. People argue which method of punishment that effective to prevent crimes, whether by just extending prison sentences or by giving a combination of financial penalty and prison sentences. These punishment strategies present both pros and cons. However, in my opinion, the combination of fines and longer prison sentences is much more effective.
On one hand, extending prison sentences is the most common method to punish criminals. Many countries apply this punishment method to prisoners. Lighter crimes will be sentenced to a few years in prison. In contrast, severe crimes, such as murder and rape, will be sentenced to a half or lifetime prison. However, the method of judgment for this punishment maybe not that subjective. Furthermore, the longer the punishment, the costs for maintaining the prisoner will be higher.
On the other hand, the combination of financial penalty and longer prison may be more effective to reduce crime numbers. Firstly, the fines will influence or impact not only criminals but also the family of criminals. This will create accumulative preventive measures. The family will try their best to prevent the family member to conduct crimes. Furthermore, the fines can be used for the government income or for the maintenance of the prison's facility and the prison's employees.
To sum up the essay, the punishment method by giving an extension of prison sentences may lack subjectiveness. In contrast, a combination of fines and extension of prison will improve the preventive measures and present the income for prisons.
