The chart below shows the total number of Olympic medals won by twelve different countries.

Write a report for a university, lecturer describing the information shown below.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

You should write at least 150 words.

Writing task 1

The graphs present the total numbers of the top 12 countries winning the Olympic medals divided by gold, silver, and bronze.

Overall, it is clear that the USA won the most medal leaving a significant gap from the second place, the Soviet Union followed by the UK, France and other nations in a relatively closer gap. However, after Hungary, the order no longer refers to the total number of medals owned.

According to the chart, more than 2,200 medals were won by the USA which consisted of roughly 800 gold, 700 silver and about 600 bronze leading a significant difference to the second place, the Soviet Union which owned around 1,000 medals combined. Although the gap was not as impressive as the USA, the Soviet Union also created a considerable lead from the next contender, the United Kingdom possessing approximately 700 combined medals. France, Germany, Italy Sweden and Austria took small sums of total medal numbers. Interestingly, even though Hungary and China won more gold medals than Australia and Japan respectively, they were placed in the lower position of said countries.

Write about the following topic.

Some people believe that school children should not be given homework by their teachers, whereas others argue that homework plays an important role in the education of children.

Discuss both of these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Writing task 2

The existence of homework in the educational system is a debatable topic. While some people think that homework is a crucial part of child education, others believe that their children should not have any homework. This essay will examine both views and explain why I think more engaging and interactive homework is the better way to help improve the education of children.

The nature of homework leads to the cultivation of discipline and time management which is the reason why many people think that homework plays an essential role in a child's education. The homework needs to be completed in a certain assigned period resulting in the development of disciplinary behaviour allowing children to be organised and orderly, an important part of character traits for a better person and society. Discipline in self-development would not occur without the presence of homework in the education of children.

Others, however, feel that after-school time should be an ideal opportunity for children to relax and explore themselves. Realising what you are good at or you like is important as well. So having homework to complete is ruining the precious time of children's development which is crucial for the future of academic decisions. The more time children are occupied by homework, the fewer chance for them to really get to know themselves. Thus, after-school homework is unnecessary for children's education.

In my view, a better way to handle homework is by making homework intuitive and fun. The cultivation of homework over a child's discipline is undeniable. So if the homework is intuitive and allows such self-exploration for the child, it would be great material to ingrain not only self-disciplinary but also self-realisation as well. For instance, in an art subject, instead of a reading assignment about Impressionism, the task could ask children to draw a certain object in an impressionist art style. As a result, the children learn about time management from assignment completion and explore the artistic aspect of themselves at the same time. Moreover, other subjects can apply this interactive idea to their assignment too, which theoretically covers most aspects of child exploration. Therefore the more intuitive way the homework becomes, the better the educational development the children would have.

In conclusion. the argument about homework may continue to exist. In order to maximise its benefits to child development, the way how homework is implemented needs to be changed in a creative manner.
